Boys: 2017 Wimbledon Juniors, grass - Grade A (Week 28)

Aidan becomes our first boys winner, digging in from an unpromising position at 1-4* in the final set to reel off five straight games dropping only 2 or 3 points, aided by some woeful serving from the American, who finished with two doubles, enabling Aidan to win 6-2 2-6 6-4

The Monday matches are again on courts 5/6 so may well be streamed. Match of the round arguably saw one of the players we have featured quite often in this section, Timofey Skatov, knock out third seed Zxombor Piros (Australian Open champion and ATP 902) in straight sets.

I like the fact that Co Moutet, the number one seed, who was knocked out by Hamish at Roehampton, has got the call up to hit balls with Djoko on the basis that he's left-handed and French, and so good practice for his upcoming match against Mannarino

Glad George got the win in the end. I joined his match briefly at 4*-1 in the second set and a combination of missed opportunities, untimely doubles and good play from his opponent let the set slip away, so it would have been hard for him to take had he not rebounded in the second. His reward is a crack at the strong German some of us saw play Jack Draper in Berlin. Hamish appears to have the best chance of further progress against the qualifier who accounted for Jack Molloy

Naoki Tajima (JPN) d. (WC) Max Stewart 6-4 6-4
(WC) George Loffhagen d. Juan Alejandro Hernandez Serrano (MEX) 6-3 4-6 6-2

(WC) Barnaby Smith d. (Q) Thomas Bosancic (AUS) 5-7 6-4 6-3

R2

(WC) Hamish Stewart v (Q) Francesco Forti (ITA)
(WC) Aidan McHugh v (6) Marko Miladinovic (SRB)

Anton's injury unfortunately has caused him to pull out of doubles with Max. Rewinding the stream of his singles match I see that he called the trainer at the change of ends at 0-3 down and decided after treatment that he couldn't continue

So pleased for Barnaby and George - they were the two who came within a whisker of winning great matches at the Nike G1 event, but ended up losing.
Lovely to see a reversal today. And that'll take George up another 15 places or so in the junior rankings, to about 158 or so.

NB There are two 'holes' in the doubles draw now (one obviously for Anton/Max). Will there be ALTs who get put in to plug the gaps?

Just for comparison, last year (2016) we had:

Lost in R1: (wc) Alexis Canter, (wc) Max Stewart, (wc) Aidan McHugh (wc) Ali Gray

Lost in R2: (wc) Ben Draper, Jay Clarke, (wc) Luke Hammond, (wc) Finn Bass, Ryan Storrie, (wc) Ewan Moore

It's hardly relevant, given how they players evolve differently after moving to adult tennis, but to compare it to last year you could say that we are already doing worse in that we have only 4 boys through to R2 rather than 6.

However, if one of the four were to win their next match it would probably count as more successful.

And, depending how you look at things, a positive note could be:

2016: wins for: 5 x 'last year in juniors', 1 x 'one year to go in juniors'

2017: wins for: 2 x 'last year in juniors', 1 x 'one year to go in juniors', and 1 x 'two years to go in juniors'.

Fantastic start from McHugh against the no.6 seed. He's been hitting some forehands that look out of this world. Up 4-0.
