I think Hamish got under his skin a bit, there was one occasion where Moutain whacked the ball across the net (when about to serve) in frustration and Hamish asked the umpire whether it was a serve, made me chortle.
Fran made mincemeat of her first round opponent, she obviously has by necessity a different grip to any other player but given how well she hits the ball her grip tightness and racket control must be about right. On Sunday she pushed Gemma close for best British girls performance of the day. I didn't see much of Ali. Great to see them all come through again today, Fran v Whitney almost worth sciving work for.
Did you see any of Holly's match, Oakie? Or Emma's? (Or indeed the younger boys' ones?)
Would be interested to hear your opinion. (Although you can always tell roughly how someone plays, sometimes, when you move around, you wonder if you just happen to get the worst/best 10 mins of each set and not a real picture).
I telt you at the time of the Wimbledon Q WC play-offs that I reckoned Ali had a game and instincts very well suited to grass.
Well done all 3
Yep, those results in the last two matches in particular are really convincing. She still plays like the feisty little 14 year-old from a few years back that tempted a tiddly flutter - but just that bit more assured. (Although I thought there was a bit of 'doubles' style chippy shots that had crept in - post Nik Slater? - but, of course, it might just be 'interesting variation' )
Not that surprised that Emily lost - she didn't look to have really made much progress - it was solid enough but no more.
Fran and Gemma must be running on fumes by now - that's a string of very tight matches they've had.
But there will be some good jumps up the rankings for all three. And great to see them doing well at home, too.
Yes I did get to see plenty of Fran and Holly, I am not at all surprised that Fran beat Whitney.
Holly I think will do very well although as tall as Whitney I just felt she looked a year behind in terms of strength which she is at least! Emma I saw her play a couple of games, she was competitive but again the age difference and relative lack of experienced showed.
I feel it will take them both 6 months to get used to playing at grade 1 level, they are both year 9 at school so will have another year playing at this level before exams even start to get in the way in 2019.
Gemma did very well in her game, over hit a bit but a very good victory over a top 20 junior olde but not that dissimilar in style, she is physically gifted ie. looked very well conditioned, powerful frame but I can't see her physique changing that much as she transitions to seniors. Perhaps that is why her progress through the rankings paused but on this performance she should kick on again.
Loved watching Fran who beat up her opponent, Fran was very competitive on every point despite winning easily, seemed to have the point by point mindset, looks a well balanced focused athlete in every respect, I don't know but she struck me low maintaince and well suited to transitioning. The strongest of the girls I saw play.
Would have like to watch Ali but she wasn't on a great court for spectating.
Anton won fairly convincingly agains s diminutive Argentinian who he basically over powered on grass.is already 6ft ish with the potential for an inch or two more. Not all about the serve played a couple of nice lobs and touch shots. Jack looks a very good player good weight of shot but a bit like Holly in that there is plenty more growth to come over the 12-24 months.
I was as excited after going as I was before I feel we will have plenty to follow transitioning over the next few years. Should be fun.
Tx, Oakie. Always interesting. And, yes, our youngsters were certainly exciting.
Not sure the year 9 point applies to Holly because if she is schooled in the States, then it's done by calendar year. But it doesn't really make any difference - she certainly looks a little light in shot at the moment but, as you say, that's purely an age thing and she looks as though she will have a great physique for tennis when she matures - and she certainly has oodles of talent.
I know exactly what you mean about Fran and 'low maitenance' - she's SO businesslike in how she goes about things - very mature. And not surprised that she has eeked out two third set tie-breaks.
As you say, a great showcase for our players - and spectators.
Ali has the daunting prospect of Claire Liu, who has only lost a handful of games after the first set against Jodie. Ali is in the bottom half which still has its three top seeds (Australian Open champion Marta Kostyuk and American Taylor Johnson contesting the other quarter-final). In the top half En Shuo Liang is the only seed, though Kaja Juvan has the strongest record in the section. She has played 5 $10K/15K events in the last year, winning 2 along with 1 final and 1 semi. Ali/Fran have reached the doubles quarter-finals
QF
Francesca Jones v Kaja Juvan (SLO)
(14) En Shuo Liang (TPE) v (WC) Gemma Heath
(WC) Ali Collins v (2) Claire Liu (USA)
Great to see all three girls still in there playing and well, chances to go really deep perhaps. Regardless an excellent confidence boost for next week. Looks like another great days tennis in prospect.
