What an engrossing match!
Jo guaranteed to return to the top 10, and a new CH if she wins.
That means she has made two out of the last three Premier Mandatory finals.
SF: Johanna KONTA (GBR) [10] 11 defeated Venus WILLIAMS (USA) [11] 12 6-4 7-5
F: Johanna KONTA (GBR) [10] 11 v. Caroline WOZNIACKI (DEN) [12] 14
> H2H 1-0
> 2017 Australian Open - Hard - JK[9], CW[17] - R32 - Konta by 6-3 6-1
Well done to Ms Konta - and I say that despite the fact that she beat Venus Williams, who's someone I generally want to see win!
So ... back at the career high. And ( I can never keep the WTA structure clear) is this her first Premier Mandatory Final?
Not a bad start to the year .....
PS: To go back to an earlier discussion on this thread. I had several reactions to the Halep/Cahill exchange. First was that I've always thought Darren Cahill was a good egg, and that confirmed it. Second was that Halep's dialogue with him sounds very much like the kind of dialogue that AM often has with himself when things aren't going well (only with fewer expletives). Sensitive perfectionists are sensitive perfectionists. Difference is the on-court coaching and miking. Third: I don't like the on-court coaching either, and would love to see it go. And fourthly, if you're going to have it, don't mike it. By definition, it's going to happen when people are at their lowest - why make a display of them at that point?
Venus is a good match up for Jo. She uses Venus pace off the ball and moved her around and Venus isn't the greatest mover these days.
Jo has had a nice draw, only Simona as a really big star and she fell apart mentally at the end. Still not convinced Jo is playing her best tennis yet, but she is grinding out results.
Wozza will be a different proposition to Venus. One of the best defensively on tour and Jo will have to be patient and cut out the errors. Fitness in the heat and humidity may be a factor.
