Fantastic, hope she can have a good grass court season and maybe get to Wimbledon again
Welcome - unfortunately, we know that the only way Em will get into Wimbledon is via a ranking as she will be overlooked for a wildcard.
Yes. I agree.
I hate the idea that only the youngsters 'deserve' a wildcard because they are the up-and-coming.
As per the LTA bods overheard talking about Sam Murray last year, in my view it has nothing really to do with potential but simply about trying to get points for their own players to justify their existence.
In France, older players often get a wildcard in recognition of their accomplishments or their contribution towards the country's tennis. Not every year so it looks like a gravy train. But mixing it up, so it's Sam (say) one year, Emily the next. And the public like it.
It was rather surrreal having a British player hanging around Wimbledon qualifying, because she was ranked high enough ( from quite a small number of counters ) to be a qualifying alternate, but had not been given a qualifying WC.
In the meantime since the qualifying list was made up Sam had also performed pretty well on grass and I've not checked, but could imagine that her ranking by then would have been good enough for a qualifying entry if achieved by the original entry date.
