And on a random note ... when I saw there were two Finns in the boys doubles QFs, I did wonder where Salmon is today - it would have given him such pleasure! (That's not a pun, for those newer to the board ... Salmon used to post here, and was fond of fish-y sounding names). I was myself inordinately pleased to see that the Bass/Bryde team were playing a Menelaos (Efstathiou). They're probably a dime a dozen on Cyprus, but not having myself seen any modern Menelaoi, I found it rather as if they'd suddenly been facing off against a team of Achilles and Agamemnon. Or something. (I'd actually be curious to know from those whose experience of modern Greece is ahead of mine whether Menelaos is a common modern name)
That's surprising. Is there anything we should know about Marta Kostyuk that would provide an explanation? Or does Ms Burrage have an Australian connection?

I guess it's that Kostyuk is a tad precocious. I know nothing other than she seems to currently be so clearly outstripping her peers that I added to the match-up "age 14 JWR 17 (UNR), by a distance the outstandingly junior ranked 14 yo, runner-up in last week's Grade 1 warm up event." She was born 28/06/02.
Though I had thought it was maybe a coming quiet revolution and so yes maybe still a bit surprising. Certainly will be an experience for Jodie if there's a good turn out and folk don't wait until Mansour Bahrami and friends turn up.

Marta is creating a lot of interest and is indeed a precocious talent. She won the Junior Orange Bowl a year early and then won Les Petits As (singles and doubles). Jodie did beat Marta a year ago, though that was when the Ukrainian was just starting to play ITFs. Hopefully Jodie will use the opportunity to impress the crowd with her ability as well.
Some very good ball striking by both. Bit surprised from the bits I have watched that there have been four breaks apiece though Kostyuk comparatively rolls her serve in compared to Burrage and there have been a few DFs by both.
Watched Emily play really well to get to 4-1* 40-15* then a little sloppily to go *4-2 and then a little trouble on her serve. But pulled that out for 5-2* with some good play and a number of hearty yells ( does seem a nice competitive feistiness about both her and Jodie ). Emily looks quite an athlete the way she can keep many rallies going.
