Boys & Girls: Australian Open, hard - Grade A (Weeks 3/4)

Although the main draw only starts on Saturday qualifying has already started. Most of our contingent (Jodie Burrage, Emily Appleton, Finn Bass, Max Stewart, Jack Molloy and Barnaby Smith) are safely in the main draw, but one of the Aussies claimed a Special Exempt through her efforts at the Traralgon tournament, which pushed Ali Collins into qualifying. Unusually there is a bye in the qualifying draw, so Ali only has to win one match to qualify.

Ali is due on at 11pm GMT with live scores at http://www.tennisscores.de/livescore/itfjun/livescorer.html#

Girls FQR

(1) Ali Collins v (13) Nidhi Surapaneni (IND)

Great win for Ali who has qualified for the Australian Open 2017 - joining Jodie, Emily, Finn, Max, Jack, Barnaby.

(1) Ali Collins d. (13) Nidhi Surapaneni (IND) 6-1 6-0.

Solid score meaning Ali moves comfortably into the AO main draw.

Great to see Ali join the others with a minimum amount of fuss.

They have to be. That's the rule in juniors.

Eurosport showed all the junior matches last night on their player, so hopefully that's the case this year as well.

What do you mean about different quarters?!

Will it be broadcast on UK TV? Which courts are being broadcast?

No need to delete.

Different quarters means they have been placed in different sections of the draw, so they can't meet before the semi finals. The rules for ITF juniors state players from the same country have to be kept apart as much and as far as possible in the draw.

I doubt it will be on TV but there is an offer on Eurosport Player for 12 months for £20.00. At the Australian Open they are broadcasting from every court, so you can watch any match you want. uk.eurosportplayer.com

A very reasonable round 1 draw, though Finn could meet top seed Yibing Wu in round 2 and Max could face third seed Marvin Moeller (Max has arguably the toughest round 1 on paper against a player who has won a lot of matches recently, including reaching the Traralgon semis).

Jodie has a rematch against the girl who she beat in a G2 final last year (the two combined to win the doubles title, so should know each other's games well). Emily and Finn are first up tonight with Barnaby on third. The rest play on Sunday

Boys R1 (L64)

Finn Bass v Siphosothando Montsi (RSA)
Jack Molloy v Alexandre Rotsaert (USA)
Max Stewart v Emil Ruusuvuori (FIN)
Barnaby Smith v (Q) Benard Bruno Nkomba (AUS)

Girls R1 (L64)

Mihika Yadav (IND) v (Q) Ali Collins
(4) Emily Appleton v Johana Markova (CZE)
(6) Jodie Anna Burrage v Federica Bilardo (ITA)

Unfortunately Barnaby couldn't make it a clean sweep today. Emily has a round 2 opponent who was tipped for great things as an under 14, but has progressed slowly (currently ranked 943 WTA). Finn does take on the top seed (ranked 934 ATP). Tonight Ali, Jodie and Max are on second, Jack third

Boys R1 (L64)

Finn Bass d. Siphosothando Montsi (RSA) 6-2 6-4
Jack Molloy v Alexandre Rotsaert (USA)
Max Stewart v Emil Ruusuvuori (FIN)
(Q) Benard Bruno Nkomba (AUS) d. Barnaby Smith 6-3 7-6(4)

R2

(1) Yibing Wu (CHN) v Finn Bass

Girls R1 (L64)

Mihika Yadav (IND) v (Q) Ali Collins
(4) Emily Appleton d. Johana Markova (CZE) 6-3 6-2
(6) Jodie Anna Burrage v Federica Bilardo (ITA)

R2

(4) Emily Appleton v Seone Mendez (AUS)

Brief snippet about Emily in the ITF report

" Appleton arrived in Melbourne having won the Grade 1 Coffee Bowl title earlier this month.

A sporting type, who has been a national champion in tennis, netball and field hockey, Appletons gave up all but tennis at the beginning of last year.

Shes following in her dad Michaels footsteps as he was an accomplished junior player. He is also listed as one of her coaches.

The visit to Australia is enabling Appleton to complete a career junior Grand Slam in terms of participation. This is the fourth consecutive major shes attended, but marks the first she achieved an important goal - winning a match.

It was good to get through it, Appleton said. It was my first win at a Grand Slam. It wasnt easy for me to play but I got through. I didnt play my best, but I dealt with the conditions well as it was pretty windy out there.
