Weeks 3/4 - Australian Open - Melbourne, Australia - Hard

Dan breaks, Cilic finally gets a break ( his 3rd break from 19 BPs, so Dan breaks again for *3-2.

99 points conducted on the Cilic serve, 131 on Evo's serve ( from one service game less ).

Brill, well done Dan!

Fantastc win! And what a mouth-watering needle match if it is Tomic, remembering back to the 2013 USO when Dan arguably first broke through...

Think the Aussie might give him a bit more respect this time around, however.

Wonderful to see Dan come through that- really bury any remaining Wawrinka ghosts.

Thought he was unusually passive in first set and thought the occasion had been too much for him, but gradually found better balance between frustrating Cilic and still being ready for that counter attack strike. Grew ever more confident, and whilst Cilic was a shadow of his normal self by the end, you have to give Dan all the credit in the world for reducing him to that. Broke him three times out of five in that final set, who'd have believed that?

I suspect that playing at night on the coolest day suited Dan as it took some of the heat off the Cilic ball, but what a result, and what an occasion if it is Tomic in the third.

Absolutely delighted!

That CH 8 win achieved by Evo last week against Thiem didn't exactly stand the test of time.

Wow. That was truly sensational from Dan. What a performance.

That's 2 of the top 10 beaten so far this year. Only 8 more to go.

In truth, Cilic played a poor match from what I saw (final 2 sets) but  Dan was just magnificent!  He clearly has a triple PhD:  Point construction; Defence; Mental fortitude. Would this board's stats rats like to point to a match where a player has saved more BPs?

I reiterate a point made in a previous post - there is no better player for a tennis connaisseur to watch!

I have done no preparation for a moderately important meeting this afternoon,  but after wathing a few games, I felt that this should take precedence.    I don't care if I underperform later this afternoon, it will have been worth it!

So, let us see how good I am at working under pressure and deadlines,.

I dunno, those kind of heavier conditions often favour the bigger hitter who can generate their own pace, so not necessarily more favourable to Dan than Cilic

Wow, what a brilliant performance that was from Dan. Watched the end of the third set and the last few games of the fourth and kept waiting for Dan to show signs of nerves and tense up... instead the only person who did was Cilic and Dan got stronger and stronger. A fantastic mental and physical performance

And welcome to the top 50 Dan, in at 49 on the live rankings now, a new career high whatever happens against Tomic - which should be a cracking match, if it is indeed TOmic he plays.
