First to say that I have no gripe against Jamie, per se, other than that he is clearly overendowed in testicles, to the tune of two, to be of interest to me. I mainly follow the women's game...
So can any ATP follower explain why current ATP doubles WR4 Jamie Murray, see here...
http://live-tennis.eu/en/atp-doubles-live-ranking
or here...
http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/rankings/doubles
... is constantly being promoted as the wold doubles WR1? As here...
Honestly I see individual rankings of doubles players as having little or no value beyond that of curiosity, obviously they are a necessity in terms of organising tournaments from a logistic perspective.
Statistically they are derivative, surrogate ranks that can be combined to produce an estimate of how an individual may perform based on past team performances which may include their performances within a number of different teams.
Doubles is a team game, the most accurate data generated is that of the team, the teams win or loose so I think it is safe to Jamie is a member of the worlds number 1 doubles team in 2016. Beyond that it's all extrapolation, the nonsense that keeps, journalists, bloggers forum members and tennis fans (generic) interested in the game 90% of the time!
Thanks for posting the guardian article an interesting read. Interesting but not suprising that the pain of constantly loosing outweighs the highs of winning in Jame's case and he is has had about as good a year as you could get.
I wonder whether Andy would say the same this year, the adulation and perceived value of being a singles grand slam champion, gold medal winner and world number one may provide enough gratification in a year where even Andy lost more championships than he won!
