Our under 16 contingent transition from hard to clay for the Orange Bowl - the under 14s and under 12s have the Junior Orange Bowl in a week's time. Jake's opponent is from Aruba, in case you like me didn't recognise the abbreviation. Live scores are at http://orangebowltennis.smt.com/
(LL) Harrison Gold d. Harry Butler 6-2 7-5
(3) Anton Matusevich v Blake Croyder (USA) 6-2 6-3
(Q) Patrick Sydow (ARU) d. (6) Jake Hersey 6-3 6-3
(2) Jack Draper d. Martin Maldonado (ECU) 6-1 6-1
R2
(3) Anton Matusevich v Jenson Brooksby (USA)
Drew Baird (USA) v (2) Jack Draper
Anton had a titanic first set tiebreak, which he edged, but the second set was much more comfortable. He is the only seed left in the top half of the draw. All four boys are currently on court for doubles quarter-finals, but both pairs (Jack with Anton as top seeds) have lost the opening set

(3) Anton Matusevich d. Joseph Brailovsky (USA) 7-6(11) 6-2

The seeding seems to be all over the place, it strikes me that the 14-16 yr growth spurt can really put the cat amongst the pidgeons i.e. you turn up to find a guy you could beat quite comfortably 6 months ago is now 6 inches taller and serving bullets!
The seedings are I assume ( possibly wrongly ) simply based on junior rankings.
And for all sorts of reasons junior rankings, particularly with regard to younger ages, are not a particularly reliable guide to an ordering in ability ( or do I think ever claim to be ) in the way that senior rankings are.
Quite part from the spurts in progress you point to, Oakland, there is such as very varying amounts of ITF tournaments contested in the first place.
To that extent they can almost be expected to be, again particularly in an age group tournament, a bit "all over the place" without that being any criticism ( though they actually seemed to work out not bad at the Eddie Herr last week, at least with regards to the highly seeded Brits coming through ).
I won't suggest use Univeral Tennis Ratings ( UTRs )

The under 18 event is seeded based on ITF rankings but I think the lower age groups seedings are decided by committee. I seem to recall in previous years that in the younger age groups they separate out the top seeds and then bracket the rest. So for example there would be seeds numbered 1,2,3....16 followed by 8 players all at seed 17, followed by 8 players all at seed 24.
And as regards physical differences in the boys 14-16 age group, some junior matches are ridiculous. One player can look like he's still at primary school in short trousers and his opponent then strides onto court, double the height and with a beard!!! And they're within 6 months of each other in age!! Really, a lot of results in this age group can be very misleading.

Thanks for that. So I was assuming very probably wrongly re ITF rankings being used for anything other than the under 18s.
There are few under 14/under 12 tournaments with a global catchment so The O's understanding is more or less correct for seeding for the Junior Orange Bowl (but with more clustering of seeds than indicated). However the under 16s do use ITF rankings, as many play a significant number of matches on the circuit (though rankings can be misleading as mentioned) You can see the draw with ITF rankings at s3.amazonaws.com/ustaassets/assets/1/15/boys_16s_main_draw_singles3.pdf
Anton dropped a set for the first time but came through to reach the semis. Both doubles pairs lost yesterday.
