The second of the North American tournaments loses Emily Appleton from last week's entrants. Jodie Burrage appears to have a good draw against a lowly ranked wildcard to get her first win since July. Live scores are promised at http://www.tennisticker.de/mex/mex2579/sb.html but no sign of them yet.
Boys R1 (L64)
Barnaby Smith v Karl Poling (USA)
(14) Finn Bass v William Woodall (USA)
Girls R1 (L64)
(WC) Maria Fernanda Carvajal Altamirano (MEX) v (2) Jodie Anna Burrage
Good effort by Barnaby but just Jodie left, progressing very comfortably. Her quarter-final match starts on the streamed court (link above) at 7pm Her opponent won a G2 in September, but this quarter-final is her best result in G1/A events. British doubles interest is now over, but Barnaby and partner pulled off a spectacular scoreline of 19-17 in the match tiebreak in round 1
Boys R3
(6) Francisco Vittar (ARG) d. Barnaby Smith 7-5 4-6 6-4
Girls R3
(2) Jodie Anna Burrage d. (15) Dalayna Hewitt (USA) 6-0 6-2
They have started providing umpires today, so there is live scoring (at www.tennisscores.de/livescore/itfjun/livescorer.html rather than the link in the top post) as well as the live stream . Jodie has raced through the first set 6-1
Good opportunity for Jodie to reach her second G1 final. Her Peruvian opponent has come through a section severely weakened by the late withdrawal of last week's GA champion Taylor Johnson. The semifinal is first match this evening at 10pm GMT, and should be streamed etc. (see links above)
SF
Anastasia Iamachkine (PER) v (2) Jodie Anna Burrage
Jodie reaches the final, winning 4-6, 7-6(0), 6-0; wil play number 1 seed JR5 Ansimova in the final.
A net 55 points for RU woud take her to a new JCH of JR17; 105 net points as WR takes her up to JR13, with very good hopes of getting good enough results at Eddie Herr and the Orange Bowl to carry herself into the year-end Junior top 10 and the Junior exempt scheme, and even the top 8, and the Junior World Championship qualifying places.
Considering that she's been injury-affected and that she had a very unlucky draw/brush with absurd regulation at Roland Garros, she's done very well this year; particularly on clay, which I always think augurs well.
Pleased for Jodie - I was surprised that she went out to these tournaments without any warm up event of note and I feared she was going to struggle after last week, but really pleased to see her come through.
When I left the match early in the second set I guessed that if Jodie could nick the second set she would run away with the third. Iamachkine had a long 3 setter the day before, and was having to work harder than Jodie to stay in the rallies - though to her credit she was better than Jodie at maintaining her length on the stretch. If she wins the title Jodie will I think move up to 12 rather than 13, because of the points Usue Arconada has coming off. The final will also be on the streamed court, but unfortunately (for me at least) not before 3am GMT
Incidentally there is a new format for the ITF Junior Masters, moved back to October next year (see www.itftennis.com/news/244213.aspx ) so it will be a long time (September) before places there are decided
Ansimova justifies her top seeding, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Still a good week for Jodie. Hopefully that's all the rust knocked off. As well as Arconada, several others of the top 10, e.g. Liu and Andrescuu, have significant points to defend before year end, so Jodie woud seem to me to have a decent chance of making the year end top 10.
If the Junior Masters places aren't decided until September 2017, when Jodie would be 18y4m old, I'd have thought she'd do better to have graduated to the adult circuit before then.
Excellent run here for Jodie :D
Heather started her career in earnest with a title win at Yucatan so fingers crossed this can be a similar launch pad for Jodie :)
