Girls: Osaka Mayor's Cup - World Super Junior Tennis Championships, Japan, hard - Grade A (Week 42)

Usually there are a cluster of Brits for this Grade A tournament and subsequent G2 events, but this year there is just Emily Appleton, having used a $10K event in Indonesia as warm-up. Emily is in the same quarter as top seed and Wimbledon champion Anastasia Potapova (who she lost to at Roland Garros), but first meets a local girl.

R1 (L64)

Funa Kozaki (JPN) v (6) Emily Appleton

The lack of Brits is probably down to the upcoming domestic 10ks.

Emily plays her singles tomorrow, but in doubles she has teamed up with Potapova as top seeds

Emily's R2 opponent recently beat Kozaki by a similar score, so may well be a tougher opponent

R2

Sakura Hosogi (JPN) v (6) Emily Appleton

It did prove much tougher, but Emily prevailed (and more easily in doubles). We are now one round away from the possible clash with her doubles partner, who has strolled through so far.

R2

(6) Emily Appleton d. Sakura Hosogi (JPN) 6-2 4-6 7-6(2)

R3

(Q) Natsumi Shioya (JPN) v (6) Emily Appleton

Emily was upset by the local qualifier (and her partner struggled to a 7-5 in the third victory), but at least progressed in the doubles to her third GA semi of the year

R3

(Q) Natsumi Shioya (JPN) d. (6) Emily Appleton 6-3 7-6(6)

Doubles SF

(1) Appleton/Potapova (GBR/RUS) v (3) Cho/Naito (TPE/JPN)

Even after many years on the board, the title of this tournament never fails to make me laugh.

Well done. Grade A finals quite an accomplishment.

Yes, let's hope they can finish it off by taking the tittle. Any idea how Emily paired up with Potapova?

First by a Brit since late 2015.  Their final opponents have won 5 G1 doubles titles between them in the last year

Doubles F

(1) Appleton/Potapova (GBR/RUS) v (4) Lee/Wang (CHN/TPE)

Possibly serendipitous - Anastasia has been playing with Olesya Pervushina most of the year, and she was a late withdrawal, so a scratch pairing was inevitable for her if she wanted to play doubles here

Emily has to settle for runner-up in her first GA final - her partner is through to the singles final against the defending champ (Hontama)

Doubles F

(4) Lee/Wang (CHN/TPE) d. (1) Appleton/Potapova (GBR/RUS) 6-4 7-5

Ah would have been great to be a World Super Junior Champion, but still good to reach the final.
