Usually there are a cluster of Brits for this Grade A tournament and subsequent G2 events, but this year there is just Emily Appleton, having used a $10K event in Indonesia as warm-up. Emily is in the same quarter as top seed and Wimbledon champion Anastasia Potapova (who she lost to at Roland Garros), but first meets a local girl.
It did prove much tougher, but Emily prevailed (and more easily in doubles). We are now one round away from the possible clash with her doubles partner, who has strolled through so far.
R2
(6) Emily Appleton d. Sakura Hosogi (JPN) 6-2 4-6 7-6(2)
Emily was upset by the local qualifier (and her partner struggled to a 7-5 in the third victory), but at least progressed in the doubles to her third GA semi of the year
R3
(Q) Natsumi Shioya (JPN) d. (6) Emily Appleton 6-3 7-6(6)
Doubles SF
(1) Appleton/Potapova (GBR/RUS) v (3) Cho/Naito (TPE/JPN)
Yes, let's hope they can finish it off by taking the tittle. Any idea how Emily paired up with Potapova?
Possibly serendipitous - Anastasia has been playing with Olesya Pervushina most of the year, and she was a late withdrawal, so a scratch pairing was inevitable for her if she wanted to play doubles here
