Boys & Girls: Sanchez-Casal Junior Cup, Spain - clay - Grade 4 (Week 40)

With 7 British boys in the main draw, they've done amazingly well not to be drawn against each other.

Aidan McHugh is top seed, Ewen Lumsden is 4th and Jake Hersey 6th. Also playing are Paul Jubb, Ryan Gaskin, Dominic West and Harry Butler.

In the girls, young Marni Banks (age 13) has come through qualifying nicely:

QR1: Amarni BANKS (GBR) [5]     6-2 6-1     Nuria GARRIDO FEMENIAS (ESP)

QR1: Yemisi IFEDERU (GBR)     2-6 6-3 6-3     Alessandra MAYA THOMPSON (ESP)

QR2: Amarni BANKS (GBR) [5]     6-2 6-4     Nora AYALA SERRA (ESP)

QR2: Esther LOPEZ ALCARAZ (ESP)     6-3 6-1     Yemisi IFEDERU (GBR)

FQR: Amarni BANKS (GBR) [5]     6-3 6-3     Sofia SAN JOSE (ESP)

That would be true on the Pro Circuit but ITF Junior rules ensure that players from the same country are not drawn against each other unless that can't be avoided (more than 50% of the draw or late drawn Q/LLs)

Of course, CD, you're just temporarily forgetting that as much as it is possible players of the same nationality are kept separate in junior draws

I just checked and the 7 boys would indeed all still avoid each other in R2 if they all won. They are in 7 of the separate 8ths in the draw.

Oh, bunkum.....details, details....

Well, the boys did very well then to enter an ITF junior event so as not possibly to be drawn against each other wink

And now, back to the drawing board, CD.....

I'm guessing these must be computer draws or all the best to the organisers with many entry lists ?!

The draws are computer generated. I remember seeing Gill Milne doing the draw at Liverpool G5.

I see Amarni has the number 4 seed in round 1 Adithya Karunarathne who is ranked about 240.

Obviously it is very early days in terms of establishing the true levels that the 13/14 year olds, superstars apart, play at. Adithya was quickly at a level where she was too good for the local competition in Sri Lanka.

She quickly moved on to play internationally gaining a handsome points hall in grade 5's in Kenya, Tunisia and later testing herself with less success at a higher level in Cyprus and Hungary. How this will compare with Armani who has had to come through qualifying but has high quality domestic competition will be very interesting.

That's an excellent result from Marni, another personal favourite.

Beating the JWR 241 player is well worthy of a celebration. Marni's only JWR 1227. And only 13 years old.... (although 14 very soon)

Hope her new Spanish base is paying dividends....
