Boys & Girls: US Open 2016, hard - Grade A (Week 36)

The US wildcard has considerable pedigree. Sebastian Korda's father is 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda, and his mother was a Tour level player as well (see www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/tennis/fl-tennis-sebastian-korda-0514-20160513-story.html for example)

Katie is a break up in set 2 (3*-2) and could meet top seed and Wimbledon champion Anastasia Potapova in round 3. Emily plays tomorrow

Boys R1 (L64)

(11) Kenneth Raisma (EST) d. Alastair Gray 6-4 6-3
(WC) Sebastian Korda (USA) d. Ryan James Storrie 6-4 6-4

Girls R1 (L64)

(WC) Caroline Dolehide (USA) v Katie Swan
Ayumi Miyamoto (JPN) v Emily Appleton

Katie had at least one match point at 5-3 in the second set too.

The good news is Katie has always been impressive at the mental side of the game, and has got herself into a winning position again at *4-1 in the decider.

Took the scenic route again in set 3 but Katie gets it done in the end; a good win and gives her a chance for some much needed further matches.

Next up is a Chinese player who has risen from 60 to 22 this month after 2 strong tournaments, beating the world number 1 in the process. She comfortably beat the seeded Kaja Juvan earlier today.

R2

Katie Swan v (SE) Xiyu Wang (CHN)

Good for Katie to see that out. She's had such an interrupted last few months that it seemed difficult to have any great expectations here. Match at a time, all the best to her ...

As David C noted, the problem with many of the junior GSs is that you get quite a few young players coming in (as WCs or DAs) from countries where they don't put so much emphasis on ITFs, and they're very underranked in ITF terms. Korda won or was runner-up in one of the US nationals, I seem to remember. From France, Corentin Moutet is another - has played three ITFs this year: lost in finals of the European Junior Championships to Tsitsipas, lost at the French to Blancaneaux for two of them, and I think Mahut recently tweeted that he'd won the French nationals. But not seeded here.

Katie's ankle is heavily strapped I believe.

The ITF site report suggests its her foot (not that it makes much difference - ankle...foot...)

PS It also says that shot clocks are being used for junior matches - and that both girls got a warning - and neither cared in the slightest !

Interesting to see how successful the clocks are....

(And, yes, Moutet won the French nationals U18 - he beat Furness (the half-British kid whose English Dad is his coach, or one of his coaches)

As posted before, full results and draws can be found at:
