Shinikova is the most successful female tennis player in the world at the moment, and has been for some considerable time, by some criteria. She won more titles than any other in 2015, and is on course to repeat the feat in 2016...
So one could dream up a ranking system, which would be slightly sillier than the official WTA rankings (but not much), which made Isabella WR1.
I've been known to post her player profile up on here, to illustrate a post about how the ITF/WTA points allocations are really pretty dysfunctional...
It would be a big step up for Laura to beat her; and not entirely in the interests of cosmic justice. If Laura were to win, she coud look forward to much easier potential match ups in the main draw; and beating Shinikova would be her best result since 2013, by some distance.
It looks all right to me. in 2014 she was playing 10ks and not winning them. In 2015 she improved and won several 10ks. In 2016 she has improved again and been winning 25ks. Now she has to step up to the main tour.
Interesting article, which I hadn't read before. I also note that a lot of Shinikova's matches have been on clay, apart from the ones in Tunisia last year which were hard courts. We will see how it goes later today.
I don't know why she (Isabella) persisted playing so many 10ks for so longer and didn't chance her arm a bit earlier. Should be a good contest, I think the surface ie it's not clay, favours Laura.

For what it's worth both Ladies are 8/11 favourites, so we're looking at very close calls. Laura played a big hitting, fast improving player in Sramkova 2 weeks ago, and came through in straights, so I'm hopeful. Lottner was a training partner of Ms Dean back in the juniors, and is also in form, but again on clay, so I like Tara's chances. Anyone fancy a double on a double Brit success today ?!
Tara's match shouldn't be too late, but Laura's, far too late, but I shall probably still follow it and be knackered tomorrow !!!! US open tournament always wrecks me !!!
The service stats are odd. Tara apparently won the first game having won 4 out of 10 serves and her opponent won the 2nd game having won 2 out of 6 serves.
