Boys: Nike Junior Nationals (U18/U16/U14/U12) - Week 33

The under 18 and under 14 nationals started today at Nottingham, with the under 16 (Nottingham) and under 12s (Bournemouth) starting tomorrow

Draws are available via http://lta.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draws.aspx?id=04340777-5030-4E8A-B1D3-FDA85D7D6DB5 (under 12) and http://lta.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draws.aspx?id=3D964B57-954E-4D79-A2A6-5154DBB614F8 (other age groups).   Alastair Gray and Ben Draper are top seeds in the under 18s, Aidan McHugh and Paul Jubb (under 16) and Harry Wendelken and Alex Solonenko (under 14s - the players who represented GB in the World Juniors are lower seeds. One of these Toby Samuel is an early casualty losing to Jack Pinnington Jones). In the under 18s Alastair Gray opens against Jake Hersey, one of many playing in 2 age divisions

U16 Final:

Jack Draper def. (1) Aidan McHugh 6-3 7-5

Congrats, Jack

Wasn't he off in New York at some training academy there for a short stint?

Jack's certainly doing very well in the ITF junior rankings, and is currently the highest ranked junior for his age by quite a way (although many others of his age aren't playing so many ITF events)

And the final result:

U12 national champion final:

Louis Davey [4] def. Samuel Reeve [3] 7-5 3-6 6-1

So the final rostrum is:

U12 - Louis Davey
U14 - Harry Wendleken (2001)
U16 - Jack Draper (2001)
U18 - Alastair Gray

Jack does see to be progressing very well and is definitely looking the most likely Draper and quite a bit more than that. He clearly has great ability and will be worth watching.

Well done to him and the other winners.

I too was struck by Jack Draper's success, both here and in CD's compilation of junior rankings. Very impressive.

Picking up on the lower age groups the under 12 final was between two of the team which took bronze in the Tennis Europe Nations Challenge (European Summer Cup). For Harry it was his second big tournament win in the last 2 weeks - see www.cambridge-news.co.uk/tennis-star-harry-wendelken-wins-hsbc-road-to-wimbledon It might seem anomalous that he is able to play under 14s - that is because though ineligible for Tennis Europe Under 14s for LTA purposes he is eligible until his 15th birthday (December, same as Jack). Oscar Weightman is from the London area, so unlikely to be a sibling of north-eastern Laura . Finally Jack spent 3 days at the John McEnroe Academy ( www.aegon.co.uk/news/news-articles/anyone-for-tennis.html and www.bbc.co.uk/sport/get-inspired/36560966 for a video clip of Jack with Mac)

I played against Liam Hignett in doubles last night, he was telling me he won the U16 Doubles at the Nationals. I asked him what he won, he said £25 in vouchers...I couldn't quite believe it! I used to win more than that in my weekly junior golf club medal, let alone in a national final!

However he will always be able to say that he was national U16 doubles tennis champion. Regardless of what he does in the future it will look pretty impressive on his CV. Well done Liam
