First time I have watched that pair. They look a good partnership - pretty solid
They were very good back in March, at a lower level, in claiming the Midland $100K title - Naomi rather carried Shelby through that tournament, when she was on top of her form.
Rotten luck for Hingis. There's an obvious replacement in the mixed but, given her and her Mum's involvement, I don't think anybody else could be the same as Belinda.
Tara & Maddie Brengle are on court to take on Groenefeld/Peschke. Coverage available.
Would be nice to have 3 through to R2 doubles at a Premier 5.
I am going to bed though. Sorry Tara, good luck!
There are only 4 unseeded players in the R16; 3 of them are in Jo's section, meaning that she would not play a seed until the semi-finals. (Though Genie in the QFs would appear to be a tough, and noisy, encounter.)
If she were to make the SFs, she would already have risen 3-5 ranking places. If everything goes like clockwork, she makes the SF with a guarantee that she will finish this week in the top 10, and in the top 8 seeds for the Olympics.
In 2015 she started the TransAtlantic hardcourt swing with 16 straight wins. Only 6 so far in 2016; so another 4 more here, followed by 6 in Rio and she can start to claim some hopeful signs of improvement.
Coverage available for Naomi's doubles, as she DF to hand the opposition a sporting chance, with a break in the first game; because they need the help!
Good crowd on the outside court to watch it. 0-1*
