Is there any particular reason why all the Americans have withdrawn? I know Andre is giving the clay court season a miss, but surely guys like Blake and Roddick should at least be showing up and at least looking like they're interested in the clay court circuit?
Neither Blake or Roddick can play on clay. At least Henman has always tried and wow, that French Open. Look at who Blake lost to this week and you can understand him not wanting to waste an airline ticket.
The more of them that drop out the better ! I would also think that the slow clay courts would not suit the likes of Ljubicic or the big serving russians ? So if Andy does not come unstuck to the likes of a Vliegen or Pashanski and can avoid the big two Murray could get some valuable points here.
Calleri and Goldstein have withdrawn from the alternates list - there are now only 3 people left on it!
If there are more than 3 more withdrawals from the main draw, what would happen? Would they give the places to lucky losers from the qualifying? If I was a higher-ranked qualifier in this tournament, I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to pack my bags.

From what i could tell i thought that everytime an alternate took a place in the main draw he was replaced in the Alt list by the highest ranked player due to be in the qualifying draw. So i think they just continue with the alternate system but include the qualifiers if that makes sense?
What would happen if some of the alternates didn't get a place in the main draw, would they get a chance to qualify because they are ranked higher in the than the highest qualifier.
Baghdatis is now out, and Soderling into the main draw.
I think that it is very decent of all those players to withdraw, so that virtually all Andy's 'competitors', those nearest him in the ranking list have got in, so we have a level playing field !
Actually, seems about par for the course in Monte Carlo. Last year there were 13 withdrawals from the original entry list, and that's 11 so far this year so far.
The potential bad news for Tim Henman is that there were only 6 withdrawals from Rome and Hamburg last year. He's 6th on the alternate list for Rome and 13th on the alternate list for Hamburg.

Indeed.....just updated the main draw thread above before you posted.
Just been looking at Hamburg and not looking good for Tim
