In an attempt to accumulate as many clay-court hours as possible, Andy Murray, the British No 1, has scheduled an early arrival on the French Riviera and a few extra days of practice on the slow and heavy surface ahead of the Masters Series tournament in Monte Carlo, which starts on Monday.
The 18-year-old Scot has maintained that clay is his favoured surface, most probably because he learnt the business of being a professional tennis player on the orange-red courts of an academy in Barcelona, but he plainly feels that he needs plenty of time to adjust to the different movement and feel required on crushed brick. He has not played on clay since he was defeated in the semi-finals of the French Open juniors last June.
It is understood that one of Murray's planned practice partners in Monte Carlo this week is Novak Djokovic, his best friend on the tour and the Serbian who led the Balkan team to victory during last weekend's Davis Cup against Great Britain. The surface at Glasgow's Braehead Arena was a fast-paced hard court, which will make the transition on to clay particularly demanding for the two teenagers.
Murray's opening round in Monte Carlo will be his first singles match in almost a month, as he lost in the first round of Miami last month and only played in the doubles rubber of the Davis Cup tie after recovering from a severe bacterial infection.
The Monte Carlo Masters is the official start of the European clay-court season and the first important tournament of the calendar staged on the Continent.
A good run in Monte Carlo would allow Murray, the highest-ranked Briton at 44 in the world, the opportunity to improve his ranking and so nudge closer to possibly being included in the 32 seeds for the second grand slam event of the season, the French Open starting in Paris in May.
even if a few withdraw from the masters event, i think its ideal for henman to qualify cause' he'll be used to the surface, and even if his ranking is quite low, won't he be seeded in qualifying? so he may play only two rounds and not 3.

Henman is in the main draw. these entry lists were made when he was ranked higher up.

Yes, and it just gets worse. Gasquet looks like withdrawing as does Roddick. Verkerk looks to be withdrawing as well (he's one of the "competitors" isnt he?). Its also rumoured that hewitt will withdraw also.
Verkerk only a 'competitor' in that he nicks an entry place with his protected ranking of 44. But hope Andy's not going to have concerns over getting entries !
Not really a competor based on his real ranking position, which is 1949 th.
Don't know how long players can keep a protected ranking,. Verkerk last competed regularly in July 2004, although he played a Challenger at the end of March in which he earned the 1 ranking point, which is his current total.
"The Entry Protection shall be in effect for either the first eight (8) Tournaments that the player competes in using the Entry Protection (excluding wild cards and entries as a Direct Acceptance with his current position in the INDESIT ATP Entry System) or for the period up to nine (9) months beginning with the first tennis event that the player competes in, whichever occurs first."
All entry lists for tournaments that have happened are there and upcoming tournaments also (i think it looks to tournaments withing the next 5 or 6 weeks)
