But anyway, Marcus yesterday - just wow. The only possible word you could use to describe it. Have you ever seen a player look as bemused as Berankis did yesterday? He didn't have a clue what to do.

I think Bernakis is more bemused at what has happened to his own game. He was winning matches for fun right up to the point where Evo beat him in the SF of the Taipei challenger. Since then his form has fallen off a cliff and he has a lost a string of matches where he was the clear favourite and suffered first round defeats in 7 of his last 8 tournaments.

Good to have that context to help me not to get too carried away, which is difficult. Thanks RJA.

RJA is putting a rather dour spin on it

Perfectly right, of course. And, in the Wimbledon Today programme, WHY did the choose to only show the games where Berankis played particularly badly????

But I do think that one of the reasons Berankis played so poorly was that Marcus got him rattled, didn't allow his to find his rhythm and kept him on the wrong foot.

I think you can go ahead and get carried away, GBJ !

How do people think Willbomb will actually match up against Fed? I didn't get to watch yesterday :( but from what I recall of seeing him in grass challengers last year it really seemed to me that his main weakness was that while he hit lots of great shots he also threw in lots of weakish ones mid rally either short or lacking pace or both and they were just getting eaten up by the top 100 guys. How's he doing on that front recently?

Marcus played fantastically against Berankis. All very much depends on how he handles the occassion, but in the same way Ward v Djokovic was evenly matched for swathes of the match, I suspect Marcus may surprise some tomorrow.

I consider it my primary function on this forum to provide a counterweight to the excessive excitement and fanboying that others provide wink

And yes I certainly agree that Marcus did get Berankis rattled but I think that had the latter not been on a terrible losing streak he would have probably dealt with it a lot better.

I'd be surprised if Marcus takes any more than 9 games tomorrow, but then again you never know what can happen.

The way Federer is playing there is no reason why Marcus can't keep it respectable as long as he serves well. However Federer is still pretty solid on his own serve and will not implode mentally the way Berankis did. Also this will be on centre or court 1 so there won't be a hyper partisan crowd cheering Marcus on.

The head-to-head is 3-1 in Andy's favour, with wins for him in the first round of Queen's last year, the same at Wimbledon in 2013 (the year he famously went on to win the title...) & Indian Wells in 2013, all in straight sets.  Lu's only win, also in straight sets, infamously coming in the L64 of the Beijing Olympics (2008).

I would be absolutely over the moon if Marcus gets to play on ct 1 on Weds and I will shout as raucously as I can with a sore throat and croaky voice. However, I expect them to put that match on Centre with ct 1 getting Nole as his 1 match not on CC for the whole tournament. With the interrupted schedule today, that is going to upset the complete order of play without factoring in the predicted rain from midday. In total, I expect to see absolutely no tennis at all. Now off to check the refund policy ....

If it's clearly going to be a washout for the rest of today and tomorrow would they schedule the best looking of the unstarted R1 matches for the one court with a roof, i.e. Centre Court, instead of scheduling any R2 matches such as Fed vs Marcus.

I would imagine it would have to be almost certainly a total washout tomorrow before they might consider doing this.

Thought Kyle's serve let him down yesterday, he wasn't serving the 130mph bombs he was at Notts. I suspect he'll be happy to get back on the clay for the Davis Cup, and then of course it's the Olympics.

Thought Alex played well enough, his return of serve is a weakness against the top players, but the rest of his game has improved massively, but Goffin is top quality now, so no disgrace.

Marcus was brilliant and so clutch saving all those breakpoints, Berankis was a great opponent in that the atmosphere definitely affected him, and he did make errors just at the right time. Going to be great to see this version of Marcus against Fed, certainly expect him to get to a TB in one of the sets.

Evo just did enough, not his very best, but still some great shots in there.

At least we don't have to worry about postponement for the weather.

Goat v Bomb.  Does it get any better than this ?

I believe Fed rather likes playing under the roof removing variables like wind. So could maybe do with the weather not being anything like as bad as forecast and no roof. If it remains dodgy even if dry they may though keep the roof closed

Either way, like paulisi I'd be surprise if Marcus gets more than 9 games. Double figures would be great.
