Marcus Willis

Andrew Gaskin handed over a refund from his over-charging electricity company.

Seth Thomas stumped up some of his spread-thin student loan.

Mum and Dad lobbed another £25 in the pot.

In 2015, Marcus Willis' attempts to make the Wimbledon main draw - "my ultimate dream" - involved him asking for donations to fund his preparations.

He raised more than £2,000, but fell short of the first round.

Fortunately, he and those around him have seen enough to enjoy the moment but at the same time be aware of the fickleness of the press. That said, I do hope that all the coverage helps him gain some further long-term support.

I also hope that this 'run' will help his prospects of a wildcard next year (if needed !!!! )

It should at least guarantee a Q draw wildcard, and who knows re the main draw.....

Genuinely think Marcus will remain competitive today. Would be great if he could take a set off the GOAT.

Obviously some things about his run are a little cringe, such as everyone pretending these chants such as "Shoes off" which have cobwebs on them, are some hilarious new invention. However by and large it has been wonderful to watch/follow.

So Marcus loses 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 but he had a lot of fun in sets 2 and 3. I am sure he will remember that occasion for as long as he lives.

Now lets see him get back to the grind of the tour.

Marcus can hold his head high after today. Even the bagelled first set was more competitive than the score suggested. Really, really hope he can use this as motivation to push on.

In other news Evo at 6-6 after missing out on a chance to break at 6-5* when the rain returned

Anyone planning to write a report on Marcus or Dan today?

I was hoping to be in time to watch some. I turned on to see I'd missed the first two sets v Fed but saw 4-4 and thought - great, looks like I'm in time to see the widely predicted tiebreak then before I saw the score in the game Fed had broken :( Not bad for a guy with Marcus' career high though hey?!

How was Evo doing before the rain?

Wow that's pretty good from Evo. Thanks SC. I was a bit concerned that he was maybe getting tight when the sets got close since getting back on home soil. Hope that wasn't the case there. What's dolgopalov's form like recently other than beating Kyle last week?

Would really like to hear how that match was from someone who was there: two quite unorthodox players ... sounds as if it should be great fun.

And congratulations to Marcus Willis. Some great tennis today, a good showing overall - and the most (barring the Olympics) I have heard a crowd unequivocally favouring Federer's opponent. Really has touched people.

Incidentally, there's a German article (have lost the link as browser is misbehaving - think it was der Spiegel? Edit: it has reappeared, and it was: http://www.spiegel.de/sport/sonst/wimbledon-marcus-willis-verliert-gegen-roger-federer-und-feiert-a-1100517.html) that puts his newfound self-confidence down to wins in the German tennis league. Love the way everyone is claiming a bit of him for themselves!
