Weeks 26 & 27 - Wimbledon 2016 (incl. Andy) (grass)

Thanks Bob for the reports.
I was appalled that the Beeb didn't mention Dan's win in their 7.35(ish) sports slot. They obviously majored on Marcus, but did find time to mention Laura and Naomi. But not Dan. He WON, BBC, did you hear???

Dan didn't win until gone 8pm! And by that point our footballers had already done their best to grab the headlines....

But anyway, Marcus yesterday - just wow. The only possible word you could use to describe it. Have you ever seen a player look as bemused as Berankis did yesterday? He didn't have a clue what to do.

I think Dan was still on court when that went out, so no result. I think there was a mention at some time that he was still on court.

This morning....

Well, if one of our first-time GB winners is going to be relatively ignored (which I agree is unfortunate), I'm glad it's for this reason! But congratulations also to Mr Evans.

I've enjoyed reading various countries' coverage of Marcus Willis - French, Spanish, Swiss ... and farther afield. He's clearly struck a chord. Most of the pieces are derivatives of his press conference or Ben Rothenberg's piece. But Eric Salliot has a rather lovely piece looking at things from the perspective of his French club team. No time to translate, but here it is: rmcsport.bfmtv.com/tennis/wimbledon-marcus-willis-prof-de-tennis-a-30-livres-de-l-heure-va-affronter-federer-997567.html

Interesting point Bob about the smaller court adding to the intimacy and thus helping Marcus. It's gonna be really interesting to see how Marcus does on the bigger court. I really hope that we get lots more of the same as today and others joining in such that centre court really doesn't know what has hit it and that Marcus manages to keep the relaxed mindset he has.

It's funny, this time last year I had dreams of all this kind of stuff happening to Evo when he nearly came through prequalies and qualies. So excited to see Marcus doing just what I daydreamed but perhaps even more so!
- I kinda wish that Willbomb had done all this on day 2 as I think it would have been great to see Evo get more of the first day plaudits after all he has done as Marcus really overshadowed him in the end. I can hardly complain really though - my two favourite players just did what I've been hoping to see them do ever since I started following them- on the same day!! Only about a week ago I was wondering what had happened to Marcus and still remembering how disappointed I was that he didn't get more out of the grass season last year like I'd thought he would.

I was watching all of Evo's match yesterday on Court 18 and honestly spent a lot of it thinking I'd made the wrong decision, was so jealous when hearing the atmosphere on Court 18! Pleased Evo proved me wrong, the match was a very good contrast of styles and a pretty high standard after a comfortable opening set

I don't really use Twitter but maybe someone should suggest that the Loughborough Willbomb guys steal that scarily synchronized Icelandic football chant in an 'if u can't beat them, join them' kind of way to try to intimidate Fed - imagine if you would get the whole centre court crowd doing that! Lol! The trick seems to be hit a drum three time and shout 'Huh!' with you you hands in the air on the third and keep doing it fast and fast in menacing Jaws theme style. Maybe a hakka too?

Yes - football aside, I love that chant - there's a real Viking longship feel to it.

Huge congrats to Marcus and Dan for yesterday's brilliant results; managed to catch snatches of both on the red button including the wonderful celebrations when Marcus clinched it. Dreamland :D :D

That is a lovely piece, even if the only thing it really adds is that when he arrived at the clubs first match he had only a handful of rackets, and only 2 of them were strung. And he didn't have a towel. Ignoring Ford Prefect's advice is never wise.

Yes, I love the fact of him effectively getting told off for not being properly prepared....

I think Bernakis is more bemused at what has happened to his own game. He was winning matches for fun right up to the point where Evo beat him in the SF of the Taipei challenger. Since then his form has fallen off a cliff and he has a lost a string of matches where he was the clear favourite and suffered first round defeats in 7 of his last 8 tournaments.

And is 3-1* up in the third. No real surprise at all. Gasquet v Bedene on grass was never likely to be anything other than a routine win for the former.
