Wimbledon Wildcards - Women

Happy with these! Hopefully two out of Emily App, Anna B, Lissey and Freya will take the two QWCs this week at the playoff.

Re: Emily & Ali, their combined ranking is slightly lower than Eden & Jodie (thanks to Eden), and Jodie has at least been playing doubles since the new year. Hopefully they get a shot at doubles qualies at least - taking a set off grand slam multiple semi-finalist finalists yesterday has to be worth something.

Are we sure the doubles qualis has been brought back?

I asked this elsewhere and I think it's been dropped.

Give Ranah/Mimi one

 I guess that's a joke?

So no sign of Matilda which confirms what we've been saying about her clay court summer (and maybe about her relationship with the LTA????)

Talia and Ranah get the youngster call over Jasmine (which is no real surprise) and over Isabelle Lacy, which might surprise some as Isabelle has her adult ranking but Ranah doesn't but, although some haven't really rated her, Ranah has a different sort of tennis to Talia, Isabelle, Ella etc and has just - very timely - proven her worth at Ilkley

Happy for all of them

Don't really have an opinion about Ali and Emily - I'd have rather Emily W-S had been given a wildcard in dubs

Wish we could find out exactly what's going on with Matilda but she doesn't seem to have any social media and interviews are few and far between. Not sure even the main Tennis correspondents would know much about her situation.

No not really. Why not? It's doubles and there's no ranking points this year. I don't see a good reason not to give our best kids this sort of exposure to be honest.

Just to note. Emily Lindh, Joanne Conway and Matilda Mutavdzic are all playing in Israel this week and next.
Jasmine appears to be on the entry list for Wimbledon Juniors though (but well down the list), so might be back.
I can't find any clues about Matilda though.

Thats a really good point - I was speaking to someone who said we may find some more interesting mixed doubles entries this year given everyone is freed up from the ranking points chase a little. For the fun and the cash.

I really hope Serena Williams does manage to play at Wimbledon .

For both sentimental reasons but also it would be a huge boost for the tournament after being stripped of its ranking points .

Its funny, though, I was worried about the ranking points question but it has in actual fact not caused any diminishing in my mind of the event and, I dont get the impression it has impacted the thinking of the players either. Reality will be business as usual.

Do you really think it feels diminished and needing a boost?

I,  for one, am more excited about this years event than I have been in many years, partly as I think we have lots of Brits to be excited about across the entry lists, but also because I think the tennis could end up being vey good this year.

I've seen over the forum and twitter that some are disappointed that Em and Ali (and EWS+ for CD) haven't received a WC so I've had a look at the teams selected.

BARNETT, Alicia (GBR) / NICHOLLS, Olivia (GBR) - they may not need one but are definitely deserving of one if not making the cut.

2. BURRAGE, Jodie (GBR) / SILVA, Eden (GBR) - have played 1 tournament together, reached the sf's by walkover then handed walkover by presumably prioritising singles. Eden 6-9 this year and Jodie 7-6, no stand out wins and Eden due to continue falling as her 2019/21 points fall (over 350 pts to fall in coming months)

3. DART, Harriet (GBR) / WATSON, Heather (GBR) - don't play much doubles, but both good doubles players so I think this one is fair, considering Harriet made mixed finals last year also.

4. GREY, Sarah Beth (GBR) / MIYAZAKI, Yuriko (GBR) - played 1 tournament together, gave a walkover in second round to presumably prioritise singles. SBG has played 1 doubles match this year, prior to this week although coming back from surgery. Lily is 8-7 this year having played 9 tournaments (played 16 singles tournaments), won W60 event in France, no real stand out performances apart from beating Rus/Minnen that week.

3X TBC

Emily and Ali - played together since January, in 16 tournaments. 15-15 wins to losses. Started the year at Emily 371, Ali 504 and now at Emily 280 and Ali 324. Made 3 W25 finals, and converted to the title in one of these. Not many stand out wins apart from Wickmayer/Barthel in the final. Although have challenged top players, taking Barnett/Nicholls, Bolsova/Selekmetova, Dart/Wang and most recently Aoyoma/Chan to match tiebreaks. Had they converted one or two of these the outcome may have been different, but who knows. They are really the only doubles players who have actually moved up the rankings this year, after Lissey and Liv of course. Its worth noting that Lissey and Liv were ranked 374 and 369 at this point last year, so weren't higher ranked as suggested above.

EWS and Ingrid... Played 4 tournaments together, most notable SF's in WTA Rabat beating 1 top 100 doubles player but no stand out wins. Emily with other partners is 12-14 this year. Over a third of her points are from 2019 (over 100). Only doubles team that have progressed in WTA apart from Barnett/Nicholls...

Although, now that it is clear that both of the teams above are concentrating in doubles only, it is slightly disappointing they haven't received one over players who have retired from doubles matches to prioritise their singles.

I think a little unlucky for Emily and Ali but in the context of dubs they are really quite low ranked still. Would like to think theyd progress and secure one next year.

EWS doesnt have a regular partner and isnt on the up, so realistically it has to be a no.

I'm not actually a great Emily WS fan (unlike some on here)

But I do think that, as the French do, there's a lot to be said for showing that the tennis industry respects those who've committed a lot of their life to pro tennis and sends a message that tennis is for everyone - and gives her a doubles wildcard.

She's 37, she's got a very decent doubles ranking, I think it portrays diversity in tennis, the inclusive element, to give her a wildcard. A different story for the press.
