Wimbledon wildcards

Looks as if Laura D should just about get in to the play-offs on ranking.

I understand that 12 get in on ranking ( plus 4 WCs ).

Now with us having 3 direct MD acceptances and anyone else needing some sort of WC, if there are 8 initially announced WCs ( within the GB top 23 ) and everyone in contention is available that would take us down to GB #23 for the play-offs ( 3 + 8 + 12 ), precisely Laura's current GB ranking.

Now it's possible that the whole maximum 8 initial GB WCs will not be allocated, which in theory could leave Laura short. However, on the other hand there must be doubts about some players - eg. Manisha ( not been seen in a while ), Amanda ( though might take up a Q WC if offered it ), Mirabelle ( would she come for play-offs ? ) and maybe Katie Swan if injured ( though I imagine would take a Wimbledon WC unless a serious issue ), so I would imagine that Laura will be OK for making the play-offs.

I think she needs to be in on ranking since I think the play-off WCs usually go to younger up and comers.

Overall, it looks as if if you're in the top 25 you'll probably at least get a play-off chance.

Very interesting analysis. Emily Arb (and also Holly) has a play-off WC from the tour, so that adds one. I'm waiting to hear from Lucy if she's made it or not.

Ah, interesting. I'd forgotten but it vaguely comes back to me now that you mention it, that play-offs WCs were awarded from the British Tour. Emily Arb won't need one since her ranking is good enough so that presumably frees up a WC.

Indy, it's not exactly 12 and 4.

From the LTA site:

Men Women
16 16
10 Direct Acceptances 10 Direct Acceptances
6 Wild Cards 6 Wild Cards
For information on 2 of the wild cards for Men & Women through the Aegon British Tour visit www.lta.org.uk/aegonbritishtour
Acceptance criteria will be in order of WTA / ATP ranking on 15 June.
Players without a world ranking will be ordered according to LTA rating (followed by LTA Open ranking) on 15 June
The final two players from each of the men's and women's events will be guaranteed wild cards into the Qualifying competition.

But, of course, as said above and before, 2 of the wildcards are attributed as of right.

Although, for Felixstowe, if the winner does not require a Wild Card, this will be offered to the runner-up. If the runner-up does not require a wild card then the wild card will be released.

And for the wild card slot that is allocated to the player at the top of the Aegon British Tour leader board after Felixstowe (22-27 May), if not required by the player at the top this will be offered to the second placed player, and then down to the 3rd placed player only. If the wild card is not taken up then it will be released.

So I read that to mean that Aimee Gibson will definitely get a wildcard as she was the runner-up in Felixstowe and Emily Arb (the winner) does not need the wildcard as she gets in as of right form her ranking.

Thanks CD for the clarifications.

Introduce some thoughts, though with some piffle, and someone corrects you and / or ellaborates and we collectively move forward

Hmm, 10 from ranking list makes it tighter for Laura D though she possibly has correctly accounted for enough not taking up their Wimbledon WC or play-off chance, but she does need some not to.

Presumably, after the direct wildcards for the Qualis are given, Laura D will get in no problem?

i.e. there are 6 wildcards to be given for the qualis (plus the two from the play-offs) - can be 5 and 3 of course - so if Gabi and Harriet and Katie B and Sam and Katy Dunne (and Katie Swan / Freya IF they don't have a MD wildcard) all get Quali wildcards, then Laura D will waltz into the next best top 10 ranked, surely.

Well, not necessarily waltz, as my earlier slightly incorrect sums dlshowed.

3 direct acceptances : Jo, Heather, Naomi

Maximum 8 initial GB ( MD + Q ) WC nominations, and this does indeed seem the max initially awarded each year prior to the play-offs - it doesn't really matter what the initial MD / Q WC split is.

Add 10 ( not 12 as I indicated before ) and you just get down to GB # 21. Laura D is #23.

Though I do expect enough not to take up / be able to take up WC or play-off chances that the 10 ( on top of 3 plus max 8 ) will take us down to Laura D and beyond.

The first wildcards have just been released - main draw for Tara, Laura and Katie S - three spare at the moment.

Three Brits in the mens as well - Liam, Alex and James

Shame Sam Murray didn't get a Quali one.

And Lisa.

Don't really understand that. Guess they've strictly followed the rankings. Unfortunately, rather too many women all bunched up at about the same level.

Hope Harriet actually turns up this time as opposed to rejecting it at the last minute..... :(

Frankly, I'd have given it to Sam above her, given last year (and I'm a fan of Harriet)

Ash Barty gets one too.

As does Hantuchova (and Melnikova, of course)

Dubs ones to Laura, Hev, naomi and Jossanna

I'm pretty happy with the MDWC list, as (apart from Melinkova) if I was in charge and just awarded wildcards to my favourite players, the list would look pretty much like it does now.

There were always going to be a couple of players unlucky to miss out on QWC and Lisa and Sam are the unlucky ones.

Melnikova is a bit ridiculous. I know she won Surbiton but it was a weak field, particularly compared to Eastbourne and Ilkley in particular (winner of latter will get one of the last three).

Can't really see the justification for Hantuchova.

QWC are fine other than exclusion of Lisa which smacks of favouritism particularly given the way the criteria is now worded she absolutely nails it.

Katy could be going in to the main draw with no grass practice, terrible form, and a niggle. Bit worried about that but if she had turned out for the grass the past two weeks I wouldn't have had any issues with the choice.

No doubles WC announced for Em/Nao and Tara/Connie is a bit depressing.

You could have inked in 6 of the 7 that got WCs ( Tara, Laura, Katie S, Katy D, Freya and Gabi ).

Then as I said before, to me you were looking at Harriet, Lisa, Sam and Katie B.

So Harriet is the one, maybe a bit luckily, that got out of my second bunch and the others I imagine were at least in the discussion.

And for the moment 3 into 2 doesn't go from the play-offs, and as mentioned elsewhere the play-off draw could scupper someone even before the SF which might offer a spare place.

As Sam had now won, she cannot play the playoffs now. Will she get a QWC on the back of this?
