Boys & Girls: Trofeo Juan Carlos Ferrero, Spain - clay - Grade 1 (Week 14)

Jay Clarke should be in the MD (getting some clay experience in before the French Open?). As well as Ryan, Ewan, Emily App, Fran and Lauryn J-B.

In qualis, young Marni gets a win

As does the enigmatic Julie Ball (keeping that 'top of the success-rate leader-board for all GB female players for 2016 ranking )

QR1:

Amarni BANKS (GBR)     6-3 7-6(5)     Inma RAMON REVERT (ESP)

Julie BALL (GBR)     6-1 6-0     Ana HEREDIA (ESP)

Max Stewart, Barnaby Smith and Eleanor Baglow are due to play later today

Extremely good effort by 13 year-old Marni against the top Q seed (JWR 500 or so) but not to be.... Marni lost 7-5 2-6 6-4

Julie lost rather easily, 1 & 2

And, a bit of a shock, so did Max Stewart, seeded second, losing 6-3 6-3

Looks like a weather interrupted day and some fixtures carried over to tomorrow.

Unfortunately Fran got on court, but lost out.

PS have a look on their website and you can see the fees they charge......

Although Jay plays a qualifier it is one who has won a high proportion of matches in the few tournaments he has played in (beating Ewan in the process), so a potential banana skin

(13) Ewan Moore v Carlos Divar (ESP)
(5) Ryan James Storrie v Jonas Eriksson Ziverts (SWE) or Mirko Martinez (SUI)

Girls R1 (L64)

That should be enough to get Ryan up to about JWR 27 (minimum).

Which should ensure him main draw entry in the French Open, which I believe was his major objective for these few months.

Mega congrats to him. Way to go

DE to the junior slams a significant achievement for Ryan and he has earnt his rank in strong tournaments. Jay perhaps being found out a little in that respect.

Lets hope he can win this one, some quality boys born 2000 in the other semi including Jay's victor and a older but still 16 (1999) Spaniard up next for Ryan. I don't think he has played any of these boys before. Doable but still facing precociously talented boys.

The Spanish boy (daren't go anywhere near his name with my chequered history with problems with auto correct) was generally winning through to the second round of senior ITFs last year.

Hello,
After reading the board I think I have to comment on Jay's behalf. I am currently out in Spain with Jay at the G1. This is Jay's first ITF in 3 months as we almost lost our Dad at the beginning of the year and tennis hasn't been out priority. Jay isn't match tight and this was his first clay event.. To say that he has been 'found out' is total BS. He played the Spanish U17 national champ saving MP, to play WR 85 in a 3.5 hour battle also saving MP to go back on an 1.5 hour later to play an in form Nicola Khun at his home club... All things considering.. Jay is doing extremely well and whole heartedly deserves his place at the top. He has played 8 matches this year at ITF junior and futures level in comparison to other boys his age who have been competing week in week out. I wish Ryan all the best in his next match and he has done extremely well this week and played some fantastic tennis but he has been fortunate enough to not play anyone inside the Top 100.

Thanks for keeping us informed Yasmin.

Without any background information, people look at stats and make assumptions.

Welcome to the board Yasmin! I know I speak on behalf of everyone here on wishing your father a speedy recovery from whatever has beleaguered him. We don't intend to pass judgement on here, we can only speculate based on the information we are given. I certainly was unaware of the family situation, so the fact Jay (and yourself and Curtis at the British Tour a few weeks ago) can even step onto the court after a tough time at home is impressive.

I know the whole board is fully behind our young players, and any 'criticism' is made with the best of intent, because we all want to see our Brits win matches and climb the rankings!

Hope to see you around the board more often. :)
