I don't want to take anything away from Emily. She has a false ranking at juniors and made a semi final on clay in a 10k .However she was seeded 8 here ranked 252 and anyone with a ranking could have turned up for qualifying, so this was a really weak grade two.
Next week, in Argentina, the standard is slightly stronger, but not much. Emily should be seeded again and in reality should go well again.
There is a good chance she will break into the top 100 next week.
I'm surprised Ema Lazic is not here. All her best results are on clay and a few decent results would push her well inside the top 50.
My untrained eyes were very impressed with her when I watched her live. We have quite a number of good junior girls, but I think Emily is still amongst those who can really make it and is well worth following.
Well done her

Ema comes across really well, as she does when you see her - pleasant, hard-working, and sensible balance of tennis and studies.
Mind you, I love the fact that the journalist reckons she could deal so well with the temperatures at the Aussie Open because she used to live there when she was 4 !
Well done Emily and interesting to read Ema's plans. Both should think very hard about competing to join the other Emily A on the west coast playing cardinal tennis unless they make serious progress in a slam ie semi-final or final.
Both are obviously extremely talented and dedicated young ladies, but definitely a case for making ones plan B a plan A, indeed one would argue that ema is already living the life of a Student athlete.
Great article - thank you indeed, David. Ms Lazic comes across very well. Good to see three young women, each of whom has a lot to offer academically and tennis-wise, doing very well simultaneously. Well done they. And a special well done to Ms Appleton for her title.
