RE: Fed Cup 2016 - Europe/Africa Group 1

Not a great start. Bonaventure breaks and goes *2-1 ahead.

Katie has currently only won 2 out of 6 points on first serve this set. Couldn't be much more of a contrast to the second set.

Looking a bit bleak now. She had two break points to level the set and didn't take them. Now she's been broken again to 15 and worryingly all points were on her first serve.

*4-1 to Bonaventure.

One break back, but has to improve that serve.

The serve has completely deserted Katie. Bonaventure restores the double dreak and now serves for the match.

*5-2

Rather inevitably, the first serve folds again and Bonaventure takes the opening rubber 6-3 3-6 6-3

Katie loses serve four games in a row. Ouch :(

Pressure on Heather now. This will be a toughie.

Fantastic effort from Katie again today. A pretty heroic debut all in all.
Over to the senior squad to pull this one round.

I like the idea of the Americans are doing, holding a junior training camp, at the Fed Cup venue, as a way of getting the promising youngsters involved:

"KAILUA-KONA, HI., February 4, 2016 The USTA today announced that four top junior players are taking part in USTA Player Developments Fed Cup camp, which is held alongside the United States Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II First Round tie vs. Poland, February 6-7, at the Holua Tennis Center in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Usue Arconada (age 17; College Park, Md.), Kayla Day (age 16; Santa Barbara, Calif.), Caroline Dolehide (age 17; Hinsdale, Ill.), and Claire Liu (age 15; Thousand Oaks, Calif.) are all participating in the camp, an opportunity traditionally held in conjunction with Fed Cup ties in the U.S.

The camp is an opportunity for some of Americas top young players to train with one another, as well as practice and interact with the U.S. Fed Cup Team of Captain Mary Joe Fernandez, Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens, CoCo Vandeweghe, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. USTA National Coach Kathy Rinaldi and guest coach Marianne Werdel are running the camp."

Venus is top seed in Taipei, so she won't be there!

That's been a fantastic Fed Cup debut, of which she can be immensely proud.

Despite not being able to win today, it's been a really good Fed Cup showing by Katie and she has done herself and her country proud. I'm sure that won't stop her feeling pretty down about today's result though, but she will feel a lot better if Heather and then Joss & Anna win their matches!

The first serve stats (4 pts from 19) in the third set is strange and hard to explain without seeing a match. It's fairly usual to see first serve % or pts won on second serve fall to very low numbers but much less so % won behind the first serve.
