Interesting 1st day, Katie started off very nervously, but still was too good to begin with for her opponent. Then her opponent began to not miss, and so Katie was pegged back, a few sloppy errors when in control of the rallies didn't help. Then a pivotal 6th game which she won, and then we were off to the races. And WOW, she was very very impressive, forehand and serve were brutal, and also a couple of winners off the backhand side as well. We have a star in our hands for the future I have no doubt.
Hev who'd looked good in practice all week, struggled a bit, wasn't striking the ball as well as usual, and was getting agitated, but that's just fine, get the worst performance of the week out of the way, when she can get away with it. Very kindly also came over and I got myself a selfie with her.
Finally Joss/Anna started slowly before reaching top gear. If I'm being 100% honest, I don't think they're quite playing at the same level at this time last year, but they're very close to it.
Tomorrow will be tougher, and it'll be either Belgium or Bulgaria in the playoff.
I was concerned about the sudden turnaround in the first set in Katie's match, but it seems she had this won more or less from the start. I actually watched her match with Sofia Kenin at Wimbledon again last night to remind myself how deadly her serve and forehand can be when firing. The encouraging thing for me from what you've said is that she was hitting a few backhand winners as well.
It is amazing to see how she generates so much power out of her serve given her slight frame and completely understand grandslams comments about missing the junior Aussie open to do some conditioning work to minimise the upper body soft tissue injuries she picked up last year. good to hear the serve and forehand going well.
...who brings a lot of form into the match. Since September she has won 3 ITF 10ks, and reached a couple of finals. But she would much prefer to be playing on clay.
Ranking 327; but 128 in the Race, which is a good showing from ITF 10k points.
Gorgodze doesn't seem to have much success beyond her 10k comfort zone, though, and Katie has a couple of 10k titles herself from a small number of attempts; so yes it's a sterner test but one Katie should be quietly confident of passing. Good luck Katie :)
