In this day and age, this is so sad.

The only positive to come from this is the sense that Jay has a very mature head on those young shoulders and good team/family around him, to remind him that for every idiot out there, there are thousands of people who offer nothing but support for him both as a person and as a tennis player.

Far, far to common I'm afraid. Lots of abuse sent to the women as well. There's an awful lot of sick people out there, and the choice is to avoid social media all together or learn to ignore it and just heed the positive messages.

I wish that I could even say that I am surprised by this, but I'm just not. Racism, and lots of other -isms are alive and well, it's just that they are mostly more covert these days. They still hurt just as much though. (Ref the strong an emotive comments re Dan's homophobia on the wimby qualies thread)

My heart goes out to Jay. Keep your head up mate, and ignore these ignorant small minded people.

On a more positive note, I was chatting with a top quality coach yesterday, dedicated, knows and enjoys the game but not really engaged in watching challenge Tennis, or Tennis north of Watford Gap. He had seen Jay playing for the first time and was absolutely buzzing, blown away. Where did he come from? So he may be getting some completely undeserved stick but is also generating real excitement. The calm way in which he is dealing with it, exceptional for a 19 year old, also sets a tone.

I am really happy to see him continuing to go from strength to strength its fantastic to see given Katie Bs success in Southsea couple of young players from the East Midlands coming through together, making Tennis relevant to the whole U.K. and not just West London.

If the coach isnt aware of players north of Watford Gap, he isnt aware of tennis. There is no relevance in West London

Be great if this tennis whizz ever gets up to Scotland. Imagine us having some players. Wow

Barry Flatman interviews Jay in The Sunday Times (subscription required).  Some interesting facts &, once again, he comes across as very level-headed.  It sounds as though his prize money from Wimbledon will mean a big boost for his ability to travel & play in more tournaments.

Can you copy and paste these subscribed articles to the board or is there a few "free" ones you can get without signing up?

You can sign up for nothing and read 2 free articles per week. It works for me. Just have to be a bit picky!

Thanks for pointing that out, Jan.  I had no idea that that was possible, but I have no need to!  I think The Times would have my guts for garters  if it discovered that I was copying & pasting articles, as that would clearly defeat the object of their being behind the paywall.
