Week 44 - ATP 1000 - BNP Paribas Masters, Paris (indoor hard)

L64:  BYE vs (2) Andy Murray WR 2

Fernando Verdasco or the "auld enemy", Borna Coric, in the last 32.  The other seeds in his half of the draw are Rog (3), Nishikori (6), Ferrer (8), Gasquet (10), Cilic (12), Isner (13) & Goffin (16), the last the first he could encounter.

What are the odds on Andy getting knocked out in his first match so he can focus on transition to clay ?

Pretty high against I'd say, particularly with the Davis Cup still a fair time off.

Indeed quite apart from ranking points and dosh, I'd say it will do him no harm at all to have a decent run here even on this surface, given the otherwise pretty light schedule he has been keeping to.

How he performs overall at the WTF may be a whole different matter.

Pretty long, you mean?

High seems to imply a good chance, which is at odds with the rest of your post.

Wouldn't 'pretty high against' suggest the opposite?

 Indeed

have we noticed he's playing doubles with Colin fleming?

Aiming to be knocked out of the singles -  I don't think so!

and continuing in doubles would be somewhat significant! (not that he's won R1 yet, but playing today).

Coric beat Verdasco 6-4 6-4 so ...

R2/L32 : (2) Andy Murray WR 3 vs Borna Coric (CRO) WR 46 ( CH 33 in July, aged 18, JCH 1 at age 16 )

H2H 1-1 : 6-3 6-0 6-3 to Andy over the still 16 yo in 2013 Davis Cup WG P-O in Croatia (clay) and 6-1 6-3 to Coric in Dubai QF (hard) earlier this year, not Andy's finest.

Er, yes:  noted on the Paris Masters thread in the main men's forum - & he & Colin lost by 2 & 2 to Peya & Soares.

L32:  (2) Andy Murray WR 3 defeated Borna Coric (CRO) WR 46 by 1 & 2

*****

L16:  (16) David Goffin (BEL) WR 16 (CH = 14 in July) vs (2) Andy Murray WR 3

The head-to-head is technically 1-1:  Andy beat Goffin in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon last year, but handed Goffin a walkover in the L16 of this year's Rome Masters & according to Steve G, that isn't actually classed as a win.

Just managed to watch the match - I enjoyed it, plenty of good rallies (finishing the right way ) This kid is good, and he is a fighter, but he was just outclassed on a day where Andy was not taking a walkabout like he did in their last match.

Impressive score-line :)
Time to put a Belgian to the sword (part 1)!

Guess that answers that question.  Not that there as ever any doubt in my mind.  Just playing devil's advocate.

Truth is, I don't think Andy has any gear other than "full throttle".  He wouldn't know how to give less than 100% if he tried.

Getting the chance to beat Goffin before the DC final must of added some extra motivation.

I totally agree.  Not sure how Andy feels but surely this is a great chance to land a real psychological blow before the final and I am hoping to see some baked goods in the scoreline.
