Andy will play Greece's Vasilis Mazarakis in round one. Can't say I've ever heard of him before... Lucy PS. I'm new here!
Hi Lucy and welcome. I doubt if anybody has heard of the guy except for in Greece, and the ones he has beaten in the qualifiers! I looked him up, he won a couple of challengers and some futures last year, mostly on clay but some on hard. He must be playing well at the moment to have qualified, but if that is as far as he has got at 26 he looks to be something of a journeyman, so hopefully Andy should not have too much of a problem with him.
From BBC online......seems a very mature attitude from Murray here...
Murray reins in Indian Wells hype
Murray is downplaying the hype surrounding his rankings riseAndy Murray insists he is under no pressure to make major progress at the Indian Wells Masters Series event.
The Scot, 18, defeated Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick en route to the San Jose title in February, but he said: "This is a much bigger tournament."
If Murray beats Greek qualifier Vasilis Mazarakis on Friday he will face fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko, who has a bye.
"I'd like to win a few matches, but I'm not expected to do great," said Murray, now up to 44 in the world rankings.
He added that steady rather than spectacular progress was his main aim this season.
"As long as my ranking is going in the right direction, I'm winning matches against the best players, then that's really the most important thing.
"My best tennis isn't going to be right now, it's going to be when I get to 21-, 22 years old.
"Life's pretty good just now. So if I do jump up (the rankings), that's great, but if I don't, that's not really a big deal."
Andy's got a really nasty draw here, he should win his opening match but from then on he's going to be up against extremely tough opposition to put it mildly.
Lots of people around the different websites are completely underestimating Davydenko, they forget that if Davydenko had held his nerve he could have beaten Roger Federer in 4 sets in the Aussie Open. If Andy beats the world no 5 and one of the on-form players this year - it will be one of the best wins of his career, second only to the win over Hewitt in San Jose. The courts will really suit Andy but they will also suit Nicolay down to the ground. Davydenko has metronome consistency from the baseline - he can outrally the best clay-courters in the world, he actually uses similar tactics to Andy to get variety in his groundstrokes - lots of looping topspin shots to the baseline followed by a sudden change in pace. Davydenko's an extremely good counter-puncher he's very fast around the court and has pin-point passing shots on both wings and he has a great return of serve. His mental strength and physical fitness are second only to Nadal. Davydenko has two main weaknesses which Andy must try to exploit - [1] his 2nd serve - Davydenko has one of the weakest 2nd serves on tour [John Lloyd once described it as "just getting the ball in play"], he makes up for it with his phenomenal speed around the court and great hand speed but if Andy can really get stuck into the 2nd serve and try to dominate it, he has the returning power to hurt the Russian [2] Davydenko's volleying - to be fair to the Russian he has really improved his volleying skils but he still looks uncomfortable at the net, I can see Andy using lots of dropshots and short angles to draw him in.
