RE: Girls: Junior Fed Cup finals, Spain, clay - Grade C (Week 39)

Summary of yesterday

Japan 2 GB 1
Canada 3 Colombia 0

today both matches go to doubles deciders - if Columbia beat Japan and GB beat Canada, then one of the winners tomorrow will win the group. How that is decided I don't know....

Exciting stuff, still in with a chance. I think yesterday's choices were fine given the remit is development and winning, important to get Ali playing as she will undoubtdly be leading next year.

The team next year is likely to be Ali, Fran and Eliz if they qualify.

If there are two tied teams it goes on head 2 head result
If there tied teams it goes on matches won, followed by percentage of sets won followed by percentage of games won

OK so maybe we now know why Katie wasn't selected for doubles yesterday, as Katie & Jodie lost the first set 6-1

They are a break up in the second set though.

If Japan win the doubles (they are a set up)- GB cannot qualify for the semi finals no matter what result for GB in their doubles

Hmm, and will they go all out to win it next year or will Ali say sit out to develop someone else ?

I understand, especially if that's the remit, but there's also an argument for right here, right now, try your best to win a fairly prestigious tournament.

Japan won 2-1

They have 2pts and have won 4 matches

Columbia cannot qualify having lost both matches

If GB win the doubles - GB will have 1pts and won 3 matches, Canada will have 1pts and won 4 matches

So the only perms for GB would be:

GB to win 3-0 against Columbia
Canada to beat Japan 2-1

Then it will be down to percentage of sets won between GB and Canada. Any other result GB cannot qualify.

I agree with this - so it's possible, but unlikely.

Winning the second set of the doubles helps though, which they have just done 6-2.

I'm afraid that as soon as I read that yesterday 'former player Jeremy Bates, the LTAs head coach of womens tennis .. was on-site watching the match', I thought, bad luck girls - that's an omen of doom if ever there was one.

And when it said Ali spent most of the match in tears, I thought, yes, well anybody would be with sourpuss Jeremy sitting looking on.....

So good luck to them in the third set, and good luck to them vis-a-vis paulisi's permutations - would be lovely if they could still make it through, despite . . . .

"Developing" Ali that losing can hurt ?!

Maybe integating her, but not putting so much on her shoulders, and yes again select and play to win the tournament might really be the best idea.

But hey no, rest Katy with her much bigger time experience, throw in Ali and it looks like she has felt very responsible.

But if you are going to give Ali the opportunity to play singles in the group stage it was probably going to be in the #2 spot vs. Japan based on rankings (which is really the only measure to go by, if still unreliable).  So I am still okay with the decision.

Well, as you get judged by results, that was a complete pig's ear of captaincy and head coaching.

Shame.

Very harsh on Jeremy Bates.

Lucie Ahl is captain this week. I believe Judy Murray is around as well.

Jeremy will have some spare time on his hand with Katie Boulter injured for most of the year. Is he coaching anyone else in the interim?

The doubles team lost in the third, so Canada v Japan for a place in the semi final.
