Disappointingly British involvement in singles ended today. Katie is on the schedule for doubles today, but her partner Charlotte Robillard-Millette has also retired from singles today (as has the top seed Marketa Vondrousova), so the chances of that partnership making it on court don't look good
R2
(Q) Anastasia Detiuc (MDA) d. Maia Lumsden 6-4 6-7(5) 6-0
(2) Dalma Galfi (HUN) d. Emily Arbuthnott 6-4 6-1
In other news, on what has evidently been another very hot day I see among various retirals :
1) Retirement of (1) Vondrousova (CZE), 4-1 down, who was in what had also been Katie's quarter. 2) Retirement of (7) Robillard-Millette (CAN), 6-2 1-0 down, who is Katie's doubles partner and the two retirees are the number 1 seeds and on the schedule to play doubles later today.
I know not the reasons for these retirements, but there is a clear possibility / probability.
I'm only the messenger !!
Edit : so basically what he said !

Emily and Emilie have just won their doubles second round 7-5 6-3 against a decent US combination (Tornado Black / Ingrid Neel). The Wimbledon and 2014 US Open finalists Vera Lapko and Tereza Mihalikova are likely to be their quarter-final opponents. Maia and Usue are on court for their doubles second round.
Ms Lumsden and her partner are first up on Court 7, starting at noon, and Ms Arbuthnott and her partner are first up on Court 10, also starting at noon.
Kimberly Birrell and Maddison Inglis (both Australian) are Ms Lumsden+'s opponents; they've had some quite good results and beat quite a good pair ... but have also had some far less good results. Ms Arbuthnott+ face the Russians Anna Kalinskaya and Anastasia Potapova. They weren't seeded - but they're both very good, so it feels like quite a nasty draw.
Interestingly, there's another link between courts 7 and 10: the 3rd match on court 7 is a champions womens doubles SF, featuring Tracy Austin and Gigi Fernandez against Martina Navratilova and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. The second match on court 10 is a junior boys doubles QF, featuring (inter alia) Brandon Holt, who is Tracy Austin's son. I can't recall a parent and a child playing on the same day before ... the only thing I could think of was perhaps the Amitraj family? The Dents? The Sukovas?
