I heard on the grapevine (so apologies if wrong) that Ryan has gone out to the States on his own, no coach and no parents.

I think that's great for his personal development / independence etc.

But can't help wondering what the LTA are up to if they aren't even accompanying and providing support for one of their top young prospects, going to a couple of the top tournaments of the year . . .

Maybe he wanted to do it himself?

You're absolutely right - who knows.... but I do find the LTA odd sometimes . . .

Unfortunately it wasn't to be for Ryan yesterday, who lost out to Kirkov, 6-3  6-2

Ali Collins also lost, 6-3  6-2

Wins, though, for Alexis Canter, 6-3 6-3. He now gets a Lucky Loser (who beat a Q when the Q retired)

And for Maia L, 6-2  6-0

Alexis's Lucky Loser replaced the 4th seed, improving his draw considerably

Boys R2

(LL) William Howells (USA) v Alexis Canter

Girls R2

Helen Abigail Altick (USA) v (8) Maia Lumsden

Girls R2

(8) Maia Lumsden def. Helen Abigail Altick (USA) 6-4 7-5

well done, Maia.

She lost out in a MTB in the doubles though. Ali and alexis also lost their doubles.

Unfortunately,, the site has now reversed Alexis' first round score, and now has him losing 6-3 6-3 to Gianni Ross :(

So all the benefit of the LL goes down the plug (well, as far as Alexis is concerned - great for Gianni,, of course).

Next up for Maia is Kylie McKenzie, who beat top 10 ranked Sofia Kenin in the Easter Bowl before losing to Katie Swan in the semis in a streamed match

Girls R3

Kylie McKenzie (USA) v (8) Maia Lumsden

Another nice win from Maia:

Girls R3

(8) Maia Lumsden def. Kylie McKenzie (USA) 7-5 6-2

But now gets the top seed, 16 year-old Kalinskaya, JWR 12, ex JWR 4, WTA 824 and Roland Garros Juniors Finalist - although she had a nightmare on grass when she came to the UK this summer . . .

Maia's run came to an end:

Quarterfinal

Anna KALINSKAYA (RUS) [1] 6-2 6-4 Maia LUMSDEN (GBR) [8]

But no shame in losing to the top seed. And she'll have some net positive points to add.

A solid week for Maia. Anyone know her future plans? She's only played one senior event this year (and not many last year), and I haven't heard that she's planning on going stateside...

For the last 18-24 months, Maia has been based both at Sven Groeneveld's academy in Amsterdam and the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida (Nick Bolletieri).

Supposedly she is trying to add power to her game at the moment.

Was just thinking that Maia and Gabi Taylor seem to have gone off the radar a bit. Gabi through hardly playing at all this year (apparently injured up unyil the grass season ) and Maia for hardly venturing near seniors.

After previous coverage of them both, say a year or two ago, it was interesting that in another thread speculating on possible GB top 500 players in the upcoming few years, we came up with 21 names amongst us, counting the ones already currently top 500, and Maia and Gabi didn't get a mention. I must admit that I didn't even think of them at the time and they are players I have been following to varying degrees.

Still plenty of time on their sides and promising to hear about the places Maia is working and that she is trying to add power to her game.

Oops! I had mistakenly thought she was a late 1997 girl, but of course she's not. Then I look forward to seeing her in juniors next year biggrin
