RE: LTA funding

Looks like there are more coaches than players

Martin Weston
Jane O'Donoghue
Nick Weal
Jo Durie - may also be there.

Not easy to identify the players - Esther Adeshina is definitely there and the two other girls in the photos look like Hannah McColgan and Gemma Heath, but not 100% sure.

Perhaps that bloke over in Spain might find some time to sneak down and do some research wink

The last time they went down there it seemed to be the same thing - every player seemed to bring their own coach, and then there were the federation coaches too - those pictures from breakfast last time just looked like one big coach-fest.

Guess they all want a bit of paid-for sunshine.......

A very insightful look at the problem of earnings, although nothing new to people on this forum:

Not to do with LTA funding directly (couldn't find a thread with 'bias' or some such in the title).

But I know there were posts somewhere about the irony of Jack Draper being put forward to receive SportAid help.

Baroness Billingham vice chair of the all-Parliamentary tennis group, said it was 'extraordinary and unjustifiable' as 'The charity says the money is intended to help young sports people overcome the financial challenges they face'.

Along similar lines, I also noted today that:

"The GLL Sport Foundation is an organisation operated by Charitable Social Enterprise GLL to support talented athletes across the UK.

In 2007 GLL became aware of young talented athletes having to give up on their dreams because of the high costs of training, travel and competitions."

They give financial grants of up to 1.2k or so.

And yet the only tennis player they seem to support, according to their site, is Emily Appleton whose father (I believe) has had/is still having a very successful career in finance....

This reminds me of when Naomi Cavaday said that some tennis parents would spend £600 to receive £500 worth of funding. Simply for the status of the child being backed by a programme and moral support that inclusion gives.

Because just as Roger Draper's sons shouldn't be receiving a penny of extra funding, Katie Swan had no business being listed on TennisFirst if the sole purpose of TF is to reach out and help those who need financial aid. Clearly in reality it's also about providing community and profile for the players, and perhaps a prestige element for the sites too.

Either they means test the parents income or they just include any en vogue player that they fancy. It appears like the latter.

It's not not really the LTA as such but I was interested to read the TASS / Sport England/ LTA player-coach training programme that is on offer, and that Olivia Nichols (playing this week in Portugal) and Jonny Binding are part of:

This is absolutely nothing to do with the LTA, but I spotted this money tournament being promoted.  A steep entry fee at £44 but possibly a way for some of those at the lower end of the rankings to pick up some cash.

Edit: W/RU prizes of £1,800 /£900

OK, this is ITF Funding, not LTA at all. But...

Interesting to see the names of the players that have received 50k (and 25k) and are considered to "show the potential to rise to the top of the game". I find the idea of Sweden being a 'developing tennis nation' a bit far-fetched though - and note they have two players:

"The following six men and six women will receive $50,000 grants: Christian Garin (CHI), Lloyd Harris (RSA), Ilya Ivashka (BLR), Jurabek Karimov (UZB), Duck Hee Lee (KOR), Elias Ymer (SWE), Beatriz Haddad Maia (BRA), Ons Jabeur (TUN), Rebecca Peterson (SWE), Sabina Sharipova (UZB), Viktoriya Tomova (BUL) and Renata Zarazua (MEX).

In addition, Jose Statham (NZL) and Abigail Tere-Apisah (PNG) will both receive $25,000 grants as the highest ranked players in the Pacific region to ensure that at least one player from each region receives a grant."

Without knowing the details, this on the face of it seems a sensible use of funding money:

This has been posted re Olivia Nicholls in the Chiswick thread but the Player-Coach programme, funded by the LTA and TASS, seems a very sensible option for some of our uni/college players and has certainly paid out for Olivia, and Jonny Binding.

www.tass.gov.uk/2017/05/05/tennis-programme-combines/

Supposedly, it means an "inclusive package of on and off-court support has become a reality. An opportunity has arisen for the cream of the crop to combine a full-time tennis career with coaching qualifications: a unique pathway has been established allowing young players to combine world class competition with career development."

They commit to 15 weeks coaching, earn money thereby, and are supported (financially, mentoring, health, training facilities via their designated TASS centre etc) for the rest of the year to compete.

LTA Pro Scholarship Programme. www.lta.org.uk/globalassets/play/professional-development/documents/pro-scholarship-programme-2018.pdf

A million rules on who isn't eligible: anyone over 24 is out, anyone who has already made $1m+ in career earnings as published on ATP/WTA website is out.

Looks to me as though Katie Boulter, Gabi Taylor and Katie Swan would be eligible, Harriet borderline. Probably one or two juniors though I've not checked who meets the criteria. On the men's side, Jay Clarke, Liam Broady, I suppose Cam Norrie, and probably some younger players.

Up to 5 new players for 2018 (but not clear to me who is already in the system). Up to £70K in funding per year for each player involved.

Would be nice, wouldn't it, if they let the public know who was in it already....transparency and all that....

As an aside, the new youth initiative in France currently is giving approx. Euros 25k p.a. to their most promising youngsters (aged about 15-19). And this covers about 150 players ! This is on top of all the other free coaching etc. that they get if they are part of the selected ones.
As said, not exactly sure of the age limit or the number or the exact euros amount but it's roughly as given (I was talking to a federation coach who had been at the meeting but didn't remember the exact details).

Is there a link to last year's criteria?

Nobody among the GB women makes the criteria, though both KB and KS @201 and @301 are only one ranking place short.

There are 2 different set of criteria: the short list which has ranking targets to be achieved any time between end of July and end of October, and then the tougher set of targets has a later 28th November deadline (date of meeting). Both Katie's achieved the tougher targets in early Nov.

There are a few players that meet the shortlisting criteria but not the Type 1 targets: Liam (his target was 150), Gabi Taylor, Harriet, though could still get the funding if they meet 4 Type 2 criteria.
