World University Games, Gwanju 2015

I know they're not juniors as such, but as it's students (technically) and male and female together, it seemed to fit better here than as two separate entries in the 'pro tennis' men and women thread.

Our team is available here:

http://www3.lta.org.uk/Tennis-Foundation/News1/2015/June-2015/British-team-selected-for-World-University-Games/

Mens Singles:

Mark Whitehouse, ATP singles ranking: 1084. National ranking 47 (Imperial College London)

Joe Salisbury, ATP singles ranking: 768. ATP Doubles 299. National ranking 29

Mens Doubles:

Darren Walsh, ATP Doubles 159 (Southern Methodist University, Dallas.)

Joe Salisbury, ATP Doubles 299 (University of Memphis)

Mixed Doubles:

Darren Walsh, ATP Doubles ranking 159

Alexandra Walker, National ranking 36 (University of Bath)

Ladies Singles:

Olivia Nicholls, National ranking 23 (Loughborough University)

Daneika Borthwick,  National ranking 520 (US College Ranking 87) (Florida State University)

Ladies Doubles:

Alexandra Walker

Daneika Borthwick

Joe and Mark start their R2 matches tomorrow.

Daneika Borthwick (Florida State) got a 6-2 6-2 victory in R1.

Olivia Nicholls (Loughborough) lost her R1 match in three sets

the two of them won their first doubles match by w/o

Joe salisbury lost his first match, which is a bit of a shame/shock, to Masato Shiga from Japan, WR 1156 or so.

Mark Whitehouse won his, however.

Joe and Darren Walsh also won their first match in the doubles, no problem.

In the girls, Danieka lost in three sets.

Danieka and Alex Walker also lost their doubles match, in a MTB

Sure, here it is:

(for some reason it defaults to badminton, but you can see the tennis heading over on the left and click on that)

Thanks Coup, I wonder how they selected the team? I would have thought the team who wins the BUCS championships gets to play to represent a British Uni, rather than random players who are at different universities around the world. Although I guess the US must have all the strongest teams over there with the amount of bursaries they give out.

No B2W, it's not a games between different universities, it's a games between nations with teams made up of their nationals who are university students as defined in the games rules.  The LTA emailed those who were of the right age group, set out the qualifying criteria and asked them to apply if they wanted to be considered for the team.  Not sure how they then picked the team from those that were interested.

Curious to know how Salisbury counts as a student when I though he graduated last spring/summer (2014) and has been on the pro tour for the last 12 months?

NB In round three, Mark Whitehouse lost out in two very tight sets.

British students (no matter where they study) attended selection days at the NTC. Selection was based on previous results at BUCS championships and representative matches. Results from matches at Universities Overseas were also reviewed. The daily schedule can be found at FISU.net with videos from most sports and a full section on Tennis and also on the BUCS Facebook site.

Excellent! There's something very nice about medals ... they convey a gravity and importance. Hope they can be won in the Mixed, too!

I thought I saw a tweet earlier saying Darren and Joe won their men's doubles match today.
