Yes, I'm not trying to make a mountain out of a molehill about the Beecher/Joel exchange.
And they had walked off from the main group of people by 15 yards or so.
I don't think Colin realised quite how far his voice was carrying - it's flat and calm and quiet out there and it's easy to talk a bit louder than you imagine when you get a bit het up.
Although that doesn't change the fact that the things were said and the nasty tone was clear- pointed and personal.
But it's true, it went through my head that perhaps that's what Joel needed? A shake-up? Maybe Colin's approach was 'for the best', so to speak. Who knows?
Although that was just me trying to think about it from the other side - my gut feeling was certainly that there's a time and a place for everything and this was neither.
But Andy and others highly rate Colin and it's true that methods taken out of context are exactly that - out of context.
In fact, I probably had more of a problem with Jeremy Bates (although me 'having a problem with him' is, obviously, ridiculous and utterly irrelevant).
Standing right behind him (and Jane O'Donaghue, I think it was) during Jodie's match, the man had nothing good to say. Jodie's young, playing the second seed, and playing some excellent tennis (and some wild misses). She was quickly losing. He made some negative remark (can't remember exactly). When she fought well and got back to 5-5 and then hit one wayward shot, all he said was "now she'll throw it all away". When she lost the game and it was 5-6, he said "that's the set gone". When she proved him wrong and made it into a tie-break, nothing was said. She was then 1-2 down in the tie-break and he said "that's it, Xu's got this now". It was endless. (It's true, she lost the TB, but very tight, only 5-7 or so...)
It made no difference to the match, of course, Jodie couldn't hear him. But I was shocked/nonplussed/bemused/whatever to hear such endless negative put-downs.

Complete wipeout for the boys. I don't have time to check the records but it may well be the first time that's happened. Jonathan had numerous set points in set 2 on serve.

Great shame, at least most of our stronger boys if not all can have another crack next year. Ryan has shown some progress and Finn started well. Hey ho!
Quite a nice win especially for Messrs Bass and Canter; the US/GRE players are both quite good. Mr Bass seems to be progressing well. Every time I see his name mentioned, I wonder whether Salmon ever comes onto this board any more - I would have thought the name would give him great joy!

Similar thoughts had passed my mind occasionally - I guess Finn Bass v Tuna Altuna would send him into rapture (and yes Salmon does still visit the board from time to time). I saw a bit of the match near the end, and they seemed to be playing well, and getting good support from the crowd. No joy today for Ryan and Luke though.
Four Americans in the quarter-finals despite fourth seed Michael Mmoh losing surprisingly to a Spaniard

Finn and Alexis lost their doubles to the huge American (6 ft 10, I think) and Japanese partner - 6-1 7-5
Reilly says he is just over 6ft 10, and represented by the same agent as John Isner, so his agent appears to be trying to monopolise that end of the height spectrum Plenty of further opportunity to see him here as he is also in the singles semis. He and Akira were certainly a little and large combo causing plenty of problems for Finn and Alexis, but they resisted well in the second set (didn't see the first) saving matchpoints when Alexis served at 4-5
And he is now in the finals of singles and SFs of doubles. I'm curious - has anyone else seen him play? I watched a very few minutes of one of his matches, just out of curiosity, but it was so ugly that I really couldn't bear to keep watching when there were so many good things going on. Gather from Zootennis' reporting that he himself felt that that match was pretty ghastly and an aberration - just as well! He's obviously been doing something right since ... though at a guess it's primarily first-strike tennis.
Players who are abnormally tall often take time to hone their game (neither Ivo Karlovic nor John Isner made much impression in their teens) and end up reliant on serve and powerful groundies to compensate for their deficiencies. I didn't see any of today's match but noted that he served 18 aces in a two set win (over Taylor Fritz) - plays Mikael Ymer in Sunday's final
Reilly halfway to the double with a 7-6(5) 6-4 win. With his weaponry (15 aces, average first serve around 130mph 41 winners to Ymer's 8) he should make a big impact on the Tour. Ymer has a nice all-round game but is better suited to clay and needs to fill out a bit

I wonder how many times he will be compared to Mr Isner during his career ?!
