Katie seeming completely immune to scoreboard pressure. She couldn't touch Gordon's serve in the first set, until 4-5* down, when she got several break points. Broke back twice in the second set; then came back from 1*-5 down in the third.
Maia has lost 6-2, 6-1, to Blinkova, who has had a very good run in the Euroclay season. Maia took only one of 12 break points - so it could clearly have been closer than that.
Fantastic comeback, here we go again very Aussie Openesque start. I don't doubt her phenomenal resilience to pressure and capacity to comeback my only concern is stamina. Fingers crossed for the next round.
Next round doesn't get much easier, against Sebov, who has also had a very good clay court season.
OTOH, her first round doubles match couldn't be easier, against two French WCs who haven't been doing very well in Grade 4s.
I am surprised that whoever is doing Katie's schedule has opted for so few clay court tournaments - she entirely skipped the South American swing, to play Sharm instead, then has only played the two massive tournaments in Europe, Italian and French Opens, with no warm-up for either.
She was nearly caught cold again - came within match point saved today to only playing 2 matches on clay this year, before the Orange Bowl.
Sebov beat Katie in 3 sets in Australia earlier this year avenging a 3 set loss at the Canadian Open. Their match is 4th on court 11. Emily is first on court 5 tomorrow, returning later for her doubles. Maia also plays doubles late on

Not quite clear why Ms Swan, who had such a long match, is one of the few girls given a second round today, but there we are. Fantastic win against Ms Gordon. Brilliant stuff.
