Katie's backhand looking a little pedestrian but the forehand more than makes up for it as she breaks back with a huge forehand down the line
6-2 *3-3
The commentators are so biased towards McKenzie. The way they talk it's like Katie is a pusher and McKenzie is a big hitter. Whilst Katie is making less unforced errors, the winners are pretty equal.
(1) Sofia Kenin & Katie Swan (USA/GBR) d Caroline Dolehide & Ena Shibahara (USA/USA) 4-6 6-4 10-6
Corker of a final with Katie and Dolehide going toe to toe, really impressed with the later. Katie just had the edge serving consistently at 100-104 mph with her similarly consistent and heavy forehand she was able to support Sofia who had the gentlest serve on show. Impressed by how they stayed calm in the second; towards the end Sofia commited a couple of UEs on clear chances to put critical points away. Fell asleep during the 10 point final set breaker but congratulations to both Katie and Sofia on coming back from loosing the first set, holding steady in the second despite loosing a big lead initially and then seeing it through.
Would have been a perfect days sport if Spurs had lost to Villa but I suppose that's too much to expect all in one day, or is it?
If Katie is able to recover, as this was no walk in the park and bring a similar game tomorrow she stands a chance of topping off in the right way what has already been an excellent week for her.
The final is at 6pm BST today on the live streamed court. Katie's opponent will be familiar - 14 year old Claire Liu, who Katie beat 7-6(5) 6-2 at the US Open.
Katie is planning to play the French with Kenin and Wimbledon with Dolehide - the relevant extract from the USTA interview is: "Currently ranked No. 13 in the ITF World Junior Rankings, Swan said she is excited about the months ahead. Following the ASICS Easter Bowl, she has been invited to Northern California to train for a week with Bellis. She will then return to Kansas and get ready for the junior French Open and summer grass-court circuit, including Wimbledon. Her mother Nicki said she is planning to play doubles with American Sofia Kenin at the French and with Caroline Dolehide at Wimbledon. Swan and Kenin are the top-seeded 18s doubles team here this week."
Excellent! I saw the result bleary-eyed this morning and was chuffed, but now it's settling in that to reach both finals, and to take one, in a closed tournament when defending F points is an achievement. Well done Katie, push on once more.
