Girls: Copa Sultana-Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, hard - Grade 4 (Week 12)

The third stop-off in Central America is in Puerto Rico, though Emily Appleton and the two American winners of the previous events are not here, so Ali Collins becomes top seed, and she got off to a flier today.

R1 (L32)

(1) Ali Collins d. Paola Maza (PUR) 6-1 6-2

Cheyenne Lilienthal (USA) v (3) Francesca Jones

(8) Eliz Maloney v Katarina Kozarov (SRB)

At 14, I found it a reasonable adventure to travel 10 miles for local Table Tennis league fixtures !

Pa! Not meaning to Bragg but I went train spotting all over the West Midlands! Now that's well traveled at 14.

The girls all came safely through round 2:

Ali won 6-1 6-3
Fran won 7-5 7-6(7)
Eliz won 6-1 6-0

All three (+Hart(CAN)) through in doubles too, and will play each other in the semis, so GB interest guaranteed in the final

Fran plays River Hart in the semis (love that name!). Ali plays Das, the fourth seed from India.

Very tight in the British interest doubles semi but Eliz and River win through:

4 consecutive finals for Ali, but first singles title which will take her into the top 200

Ali has been so impressive this year. Maybe these tournaments haven't had the strongest fields, but it's never easy to play (and win) that many matches in such a short time. I'd like to see her in the top 100 at some point this year, but she'll have to step up to grade 2s and grade 1s to do so.
Fran and Eliz have also shown promise during the last couple months, and I could see both of them in the top 300 this year.
