Interesting 1st set, but Liam was able to win the big points and took it, followed by a much easier 2nd. Arvidsson is likely to ask a few more questions, but Liam I'm sure is getting better match by match, so hopeful of another success.
I was never really happy with Liam playing here in the first place. A top 200 player entering a 10K futures really has nothing to gain. Yes I can see the argument that getting some wins under his belt might have been helpful but I really don't think beating players outside the top 500 is particularly good preparation for taking on much sterner competition.

I tend to agree. Unless it's your home town's tournament, or you're coming back from injury, or haven't won a match for 9 months (or you're getting a big extra participation bonus), what's to be gained from playing a regular 10k? It just lowers the bar and says you're only a 10k player (and only a semi-finalist one, in this case).
I remember Liam giving an interview last year during his good run saying how he had taken time to get used to challenger tennis, how it required a completely different mindset to futures and almost a different way of playing. Dropping back to 10ks is probably not very comfortable for him, despite the fact that in theory it should be easier. You often see this with juniors who play a lot of 10Ks and do relatively well and then struggle when they go back into junior events. They are as much out of their comfort zone dropping down as they were initially moving up.
I think Liam will be relatively happy with this week, he desperately needed match practice ahead of a batch of challengers and he got that. Of course he didn't win but I don't think that's overly relevant as the points are not important when you're ranked inside the top 200. It now gives him time to prepare for next week, and I've no doubt you'll see an improved Liam next week. The better the opposition the better Liam plays, and he really isn't that far off IMO.
