Girls: Campeonato Internacional Juvenil de Tenis de Porto Alegre, Brazil, clay - Grade A (Week 11)

The culmination of the COSAT Circuit sees Maia Lumsden again in the same section as Alexandra Sanford.  To reach that stage she first needs to get past an Argentinian in the top 200

R1 (L64)

Agostina Zamprogno (ARG) v (5) Maia Lumsden

Here's hoping Maia can rack up good points this week :)

Maia had a bit of a scare, but came through safely in the end, and looks to have a good draw in the next round against a Mexican who has lost easily to a couple of players of similar stature to Maia

R1 (L64)

(5) Maia Lumsden d. Agostina Zamprogno (ARG) 6-4 1-6 6-1

R2

Ana Luisa Perez Lopez (MEX) v (5) Maia Lumsden

Maia's photo adorns the ITF Juniors front page, with brief article about her ( www.itftennis.com/news/202347.aspx ). She and Jaqueline Cristian are second seeds in the doubles, in the same half as last week's winners.

Here's hoping Maia continues her success of last week against Sanford

Maia can repeat the victory, though any further progress will be tough as a strong clay courter blocks her path, who has won a couple of the other COSAT events this year. Tomorrow's match may well be on the streamed court www.campeonatointernacional.com.br/ (scroll down for the streaming and check Programacao for the oop, if not on the ITF site)

R3

(5) Maia Lumsden d. (11) Alexandra Sanford (USA) 7-6(4) 6-3

If there were a Juniors "Race" to the newly minted Junior Masters, 2016, tourney, Estable would have been WR1 - picked up 360 points already in 2015, before this tourney.

Maia's net 50 points should move her up to a new career high, about JR39. With lots of form on clay, I hope she'll also play the big Euroclay Juniors events.

I would rather Maia player on the main tour and just protect her points for entry into junior GS.

I do think that Maia is getting close to the point where she should be playing more senior matches. But I think also that she should have a year - this one - as a contender on the junior clay. Last year, IIRC, she won 5 matches at both the Italian and French Opens - 3 at each in qualifying. If she won 5 more at RG this year, that's really more value to her than winning 2Qs, 3MDs in some anonymous women's 10k.

Maia's done fairly well to come out in such net ranking points profit over the last 3 weeks.

Quite how far she will rise in the rankings on Monday we shall see, but in juniors ( mainly because of the partially renewing population each year ) you generally have to be increasing your points tally just to hold your position in the rankings.
