James Auckland is playing in singles qualies here - maybe he and Andy will team up for the doubles aswell !
In rd1 he plays Ecuador's Giovanni Lapentti [remember him from a certain Davis Cup match 5 years ago !!]. Lapentti is currently ranked 229. Although James is ranked much lower, this is a winnable match for him as Lapentti has competed virtually entirely on clay so far this year and has lost his last 4 matches so will be down on confidence.
If James gets through to rd2 he will probably play top seed Paul Capdeville from Chile. Capdeville is ranked 127 and has just reached the quarters of Memphis where he lost to Vliegen yesterday. Hopefully he'll be suitably jetlagged and will crash out in rd1.

Oh heck - Robredo in the first round. I was hoping for a nice easy win in the first round, pick up 25 points and losing gracefully in the second to give time for rest and preparation for Indian Wells.
Its actually only 15pts for the 2nd round, and Andy's 18th score is a 10, so not much improvement there. Its 40pts for the quarters though!
Andy will have to register a score for the 2 masters events in the forthcoming weeks, he'll no longer have the luxury of each good score just adding to his total, its hard not to see him still climb in the rankings though.
Nice to see Soderling in the other half of the draw for a change.
It's a tough opener for Andy but on current form he can beat Robredo if he's not too tired. I'm really looking forward to the potential QF match-up if it happens between Andy and Monfils though so, for that reason alone, I hope he starts well and gets to the QF's.

Thats not a bad draw for Andy. Although Robredo reached the last 16 of the Australian Open he has only won one other match this year (in 4 tournaments) and lost in the first round at both San Jose and Memphis.
The reality is that now Murray is on the main tour and climbing up the rankings he is going to be facing players of the quality of Robredo regularly.
If Murray is going to reach the top 20 then he'll have to start winning matches like the eventually. He doesn't have to win them now, but one day he will.
I'd rather his ranking be low and not made up superficially from soft tournament draws. The cream always rises to the top. If he gets top 30 through other people beating seeds etc etc then he'll get found out. If he draws seeds regularly and starts to beat them then we know he's the real deal, even if it hurts his ranking short-term.
I'm really disappointed that James lost to Giovanni Lapentti, apart from at the Wrexam Challenger, he's hardly had 1 decent win all season. He was doing so great last autumn that I felt sure he looked like he'd break the top 200 fairly soon. I reckon he might have made a mistake in going to the States, maybe he should have stayed in Europe and played the indoor tournaments. James' game is based around a big serve and good volleying and this would surely suit the faster indoor surfaces more than the slower outdoor courts which absorb the pace and allow the ball to sit up more.
It's a shame that he hasn't been able to team up with Andy but it's probably a good decision from Andy as he might still be feeling the effects of all the tough matches he's played recently and doesn't want to compromise his chances in the singles by playing the doubles.
