Rankings

Nice to see the 2004-ers doing well - great that Jasmine's now in there and that Matilda seems to have stepped it up a gear.

The monthly graph. smile  Both Beth and Matilda have had a good month.

Because the points graph is logarithmic, it doesn't quite do justice to the gap between Emma and the rest, but it does help separate out those lower down.  For a linear scale, i've re-posted the points graph in the Top500 thread.

 Yes smile

Nice to see +25 for Tara (back in the top 400) and +20 for Beth, too, to 443 (getting close to her CH)

When the ITF 2019 points finally drop off I think some of our women will basically drop out of the rankings as some haven't played this year at all. Others have most of their points from 2019 still counting.

We will lose a good few players when the halved points (and 2020 points) drop off (March I think is the start date - but they could change their minds again before then).

A lot of those due to bite the dust are playing college tennis in the US -  A few others are not playing because of long term injury.

If it follows the mens then the WTA  will lose 5-10 players per week and about 0.5% of total rankings points per week. The Brits will suffer accordingly.

If we can finish 2022 with 30 ranked women we will be doing very well.

Wit the 2019 WTA points all coming off in November will all the ITF points come off on the same date in March? Have to say I think it bizarre that points from 2019 will be on a player's ranking for 3 years, especially as there has been a pretty full schedule over the past few months and double points on offer. I've not looked at 2020 points but if all the 2019 points were taken off in one go as the WTA points are we would lose 9 players from the rankings.  Please note the following info is based upon the Coric live ranking site as of Thursday last week.

The following players would lose their ranking, Maia Lumsden, Naomi Broady, Aleksandra Pitak, Tanysha Dissanayake, Sonay Kartel (probably not now) Ali Collins, Ana Popescu, Tiffany Williams and Emily Arbuthnot. I guess Maia might get a protected ranking due to the fact she's not played due to covid illness?

Of our top players, Jo will lose 245 points, 26% of her total points in November. As these are all WTA level points.

Heather has 123 points from 2019 ITF events which is 13% of her total. Some from May 2019!

I won't comment on everyone but there are two groups who would be very badly affected.

A small group would lose over 70% of their points.

Gabi Taylor (will she play again?)  91%

Freya Christie 82%

Emily Appleton 71%

Then there is a larger group who would lose between 50% and 70% of their points

Katy Dunne 66%

Eliz Maloney 64%

Naiktha Bains and Alicia Barnett  58%

Emily Webley-Smith  and Alice Gillan 57%

Emilie Lindh 51%

Sam Murray 50%

At the other end of the scale players like Sarah Beth Grey, Jodie Burrage and Francesca Jones have fewer than 20% of their points from 2019 and their ranking is probably suffering in respect of all these players (I'm sure there a great many players affected) carrying over points for what will be getting on for 3 years.

Looks like there could be quite a reset, and not before time, once these old ranking points do drop off,

Yes HarryGem I have just commented similarly in the Sonay Kartal thread about this currently just halving 2019 tournament points and apparently letting these then roll into 2022.

In respect of ITF tournaments we have the big inconsistency  that the WTA are currently halving 2019 points and not reducing 2020 points at all, whereas the ATP are fully taking off both 2019 and 2020 points on their anniversaries.

For some reason, certainly looking at the leading British women players, this week even the 50% of 2019 ITF tournament points that I would have expected to be taken off on 25/10/21 ( ie. in respect of these that would look to have been added on 28/10/19 for such as Sam Murray and Katie Swan ) have remained for now

No sign that anyone has dropped any points at all this week in respect of previous ITF tournaments for singles or doubles  confuse

OER using all points in their race calculations is helpful in understanding what rankings would look like without carrying over previous year points. OER's race rankings count all counters added in rankings updates since 3 January (ie including ITF events week commencing 21 December 2020). I've taken OER as given including any errors - Freya was missing so I added her - and I've calculated positions for those with fewer than 10 points as OER doesn't provide positions for those players.

Heather, Naiktha, Sam, Amanda and Freya benefit significantly from including previous year counters, as to a lesser extent do Jo, Jodie and Katie Swan. Several of our mid and lower ranked women would be ranked higher on 2021 counters alone, although towards the lower end of the rankings this is because of the lower number of ranked women - 842 - based on 2021 counters alone.

I do see the point about not carrying 2019 ITF counters forward another year, but to do so would disadvantage, arguably, even discriminate, against players from certain parts of the world, especially Asia and Oceania.

At WTA level, opportunities have returned to usual levels. The same is not true at ITF level. If you remove 2019 points then you put some players at a disadvantage through no fault of their own because they have not had the opportunities to compete as some of their peers.

From analysis of OER 2021 counters, some countries, where they have not been able to play ITF tournaments have significantly fewer ranked players compared with their 3 year average (2017 to 2019) even allowing for 2021 not yet been complete.

China has 47 fewer players with a ranking from 2021 counters than their 3 year average, Japan 43 fewer, Australia 20 fewer and Korea 12 fewer. All these countries haven't been able to hold ITF tournaments this year because of travel restrictions. Some may say they could have travelled, but it would be difficult for players from Australia to travel with their travel quotas and strict quarantine requirements and they don't have the financial resources to stay away for months at a time like Barty and other top players. How do you remove 2019 counters without disadvantaging such players from entering tournaments next year because they lost their ranking from not having had the same opportunities as, say, most European players?

Even within Europe where there have been tournaments played although perhaps fewer than there would normally be, France have 19 fewer players than their 3 year average, Germany 15 fewer, Italy 18 fewer and GB 10 fewer. Elsewhere, perhaps a little surprising, even the US have 37 fewer players from this years counters than their 3 year average.

So biggest climbers in the UK rankings in October were Matilida (+3) and Beth (+2), with Matilda making it into the Top20 for the first time.

I note and agree with most of your points Lambda, although I firmly believe that all ITF points should drop off after two years.

I just want to add that the far-east does seem to be making an effort to keep their players in tournaments, at least at the lower levels. At the W15 in Sharm this week there are 7 Chinese, 4 from Hong Kong, one from Japan and one from Taipei. Also a few others on other lists.
