RE: Rankings

For some reason, certainly looking at the leading British women players, this week even the 50% of 2019 ITF tournament points that I would have expected to be taken off on 25/10/21 ( ie. in respect of these that would look to have been added on 28/10/19 for such as Sam Murray and Katie Swan ) have remained for now

No sign that anyone has dropped any points at all this week in respect of previous ITF tournaments for singles or doubles  confuse

The WTA have got back on track with regard to ITF tournament drop offs with 2 weeks of 50% of 2019 points drops at 01/11.

Well credit to them for a quick reply to my email asking re ITF points from 2019 and 2020 dropping from the ranking.
However, I can't say their response has made the situation any clearer.
I quote it in full! below.

"You will need to contact the WTA directly regarding WTA points earned at any tournaments, including those from ITF World Tennis Tour tournaments.

ITF ranking points are under discussion but no decision on those has been reached as yet."

Regards

ITF

To be fair the WTA ranking points system in respect of both WTA and ITF tournaments is ultimately down to the WTA ( but they seem very unforthcoming with public info on what they are going to do regarding ITF tournaments while giving rather more info about WTA tournaments ). For seniors the ITF are really just responsible for the secondary ITF ranking scale ( and it now seems have not decided yet precisely how they are going to treat old tournament points ) which I can't say I take any real note of.

Still thanks for trying. Now see if you can get as quick a response from the WTA!

Now the WTA Finals are complete the WTA have updated the rankings, albeit dated with Monday's date even though points from the finals after Monday have been added. I believe these will be the official Year End rankings and so I'll post the complete GB list.

There were 3 new entrants, Sonay Kartal, Anna Brogan and Jasmine Conway. Victoria Allen is the only GB woman to have lost her ranking (she had 10pts from 2 tourneys in 2019 so she lost her ranking as the 10pts were halved to 5pts and no longer meets the requirement to have a ranking of 10 points or 3 counters).

Biggest risers
Matilda up 594 to 436 (CH)
Emma up 324 to 19 (CH)
Beth up 220 to 403 (CH)
Katie B up 217 to 148

Biggest fallers (of those who played)
Emily Appleton down 158 to 840
Amanda down 118 to 456
Emily WS down 107 to 612

If these are the year end rankings what happens to points earned in ITF tournaments between now and the end of the year?

The standout info there is that Katie Swan at 236 almost certainly makes AO qualifying , fingers crossed not too many women sneak in front of her in the next few weeks

More the official WTA season end rankings. So the WTA 2021 rankings winner is Ash Barty. But yes ITFs and indeed WTA 125s will continue to add points as usual to the ongoing rankings.

Just wondering - in the womens doubles is Heather nailed on to be top Brit now, indeed is it official, or could Tara or Eden or Harriet maybe still catch her ? Is there any event big enough still to take place to enable that to happen?

Perhaps  Tara or Eden could catch Heather as  top Brit womens doubles player as  she has lost her last 5 doubles matches not to mention as No 2 womens  singles Brit she has lost her last 6 singles matches.

Thanks Gameover - but this season it probably wont happen?

Eden is in Dubai, so probably playing next week. Tara didn't play this week (but Emina did) and Harriet appears to be in Necker, so I doubt if there will be any change for a while.

Are the rankings really accurate? Tara, Lissey and Liv seem to play much more doubles (albeit at a lower level) than Heather or Harriet. The latter might be better singles players but does that automatically translate to doubles?

The rankings are what they are, measuring what they measure, and they do that accurately.

That being for women's doubles the sums of players' best 11 ranking points scores, normally over the last 12 month although with covid clearly some older scores counting just now as well.

But yes players have different amounts of focus on doubles and I'd certainly say that, leaving the actual ranking placings aside, our best two doubles players are Heather and Harriet who play much less doubles than our more regular doubles players and when they do, even with their less year round focus, generally produce bigger results.

For their rankings best 11 scores, with much more limited choice, both Heather and Harriet count R1 exit scores whereas for instance Tara's lowest counter is 50 points.

Hence why, since Joss Rae and Anna Smith days, our Fed and Billie Jean King Cup selections have not included more specialist doubles players. Our actual best doubles players have been among our top singles players. Now that might not always be the case but for GB has been for a little while now, and probably will remain so at least until we have say more specialist doubles players who play more regularly at WTA tour level and are top 100 doubles ranked.
