Boys: NZ ITF Summer Championship Auckland, New Zealand - hard - Grade 3 (Week 6)

Despite not much success in the lower tiered NZ tournaments in the last couple of weeks, Alastair seems to have peaked nicely for the Grade 3 one smile

R1: Alastair GRAY (GBR)     4-6 7-5 6-3     Mayez Jupiter ELRICH (AUS) [15]

R2: Alastair GRAY (GBR)     6-1 6-1     Kazuki SHIMIZU (JPN)

R3: Alastair GRAY (GBR)     6-3 6-4     Brian TRAN (AUS) [3]

The lad he just beat in two sets is ranked Junior ITF 127, which is not at too shabby !

In the doubles, he (+partner) came through two rounds, including taking out the top seeds, but lost a horribly close match in the QFs:

Quarterfinal

Pre-teen / early teen Alastair was one of our stronger male juniors and, I believe, was under the LTA wing.  Then he just disappeared for a couple of years (abroad?) and since his reappearance just seems to play the domestic junior stuff during the school holidays.  I spotted him at an event this summer and he has turned into a really tall lanky lad (a bit on the small side when younger) with wonderful strokes (really great single b/h) although looks a bit inexperienced when it comes to using those strokes on a match court.  Be interested to see what tennis he does from here on in - do these events coincide with a family holiday or is he looking to move back into higher profile tennis.
