Dan Cox

I personally think Dan is right with the opinions on this thread, it's ridiculous that people are actually bothered about what car he drives about in, in my opinion.

Edit: If, indeed, he does read this forum, which again is speculation.

Yes, up to a point, but that's rather like saying it's ridiculous we are bothered about whether he (and/or the others) need any funding.

edit: this crossed with Indy's who put the same point better smile

No issues with his opinions, I agree with them. Just the numbers seem very high based on what other tennis players have quoted previously.

as I said before, I do feel for Dan's plight but as he is seeking sponsorship I'm sure they are not going to just hand it over to him without asking certain questions particularly about his earnings and expenses.

unfortunately if you put out an article like this one you will hear things which you may not like but that is life. all the same I do wish Dan success.

Say what you like about my tennis but don't slate things about my personal life about what I do & don't have without true facts #smallminds

With regard to cars, I have no idea what Dan's arrangement is or what car costs are in the UK. But last time I did some research on Leasing cars in Spain, I could get a very decent model (Peugeot), brand new for as little as 50 pounds per month. At that price, it seems entirely feasible that a sponsor would lease a car to a player in return for some kind of publicity.

I think you may be right. A lot of players families and their families read, post or are aware of the forum. It's all about opinions, we don't have all the facts, but sometimes it is very interesting to get the inside story directly.

This comment brings shame and humiliation onto Mark 1968. Let us pray he has the good grace to apologise to the forum.

I don't agree. Not unless Mark is mistaken about Dan and the BMW (which he may be - there is another Daniel Cox who comes up with a black BMW if you do a Google search). And if he is mistaken he most certainly should apologise. But if he's not then it is a fair comment, in light of Dan making his private life public in the newspaper. As emma says, you can't put what you choose out there and then object when you hear some things you don't like. It was Dan's choice to talk about other things than tennis and make an issue of his financial plight.

Just a quick couple of thoughts. Firstly, many of the comments relate to a piece in a newspaper which is a feature story, not a piece of investigative journalism. Mr Cox, in the course of an interview, is quoted as "taking a guess" on his expenditures. That's not a considered answer looking over his accounts - it's a guess, probably made while not near any of the paperwork. And we need to remember that while I am sure the quote is accurate - the journalist seems a good and conscientious one - the overall framing of the story is not directly controlled by Mr Cox.

Realistically, at a guess (again!), comparisons of expenditures are going to be tough. Some players travel with others, so can cut down on costs. Some don't. Some stick close to home, which they can do if there are numerous higher level tournaments in their area. Some have to travel long distances to have a realistic expectation of picking up a lot of points (especially when they're trying to get points in advance of a June deadline!). Querying is fine - and yes, making a public statement to some degree invites query - but only with the humility that admits that we don't know all the circumstances.

Secondly, the comments about the car are based on nothing other than one statement by one member of the board, who offers no background. Unless there are others here who have personal experience of Mr Cox, the nature of his transport, and the reasons for his choice thereof, it does seem a bit untoward to speculate - and very untoward to be sarcastic about the putative choices. And should it be the case that the original comments are, in fact, not based on personal experience but on internet searches, then apologies would indeed be in order. Even if the comments are based on personal experience, unless people are privy to all the information relating to the choices, I'd still be cautious.

People and situations are complex. The article seems to me to be quite helpful in laying out some of the complexity - tackling head-on some of the issues facing tennis generally (none of which most of us would disagree with) as well as the perception that sportspeople have to be constantly strong and "up." We may debate elements of it, but it would be sad if the courageous and helpful aspects of the article got lost in the debate.

Lets make this crystal clear. I know who Dan Cox as I have seen him play live a few times, and saw him in his silver BMW at the Loughborough  futures event at the end of last year. I would never come on here and give any false information, lying might be part of some peoples lives but it's not part of mine.
Does Jeff Stelling always ask people to apologise for their opinion if it does not match his? Jeff is the only one to humiliate himself with such a childish comment. Pray as much as you like Jeff but many people agree with the car comment and I have nothing to apologise for!

Thank you, Mark, for clarifying. I'm still for caution in terms of commenting when we don't know the full background (as per Mr Cox's comments), but it's very helpful to have the context for your remarks.

In the last 12 months Dan has played in India, Canada, Bahrain and Qatar, China and USA outside Europe. I would imagine that each of those airfares would be £1000+ given that you either have the choice of paying extra for a flexible fare so you can change your return date or else risk hanging around for the rest of the week if you get knocked out early. The Bahrain and Qatar trips were back to back, but even so he had to get from one to the next. So I would think that Dan's expenses would be alot more than someone playing mostly in UK and Europe (although his guess is probably still on the high side).

I would not read a lot into his car, as as been stated it could be from a sponsor, and he probably did not get the choice of whether to have the car or take a cash alternative. It could easily be an ex demonstration car, or a lease car which his sponsor has a group arrangement for.  I don't think there are many people, especially not 24 year old men, who would turn down the opportunity to have a "flash" car if it was offered. As for the personalised numberplate those cost £250 and this could have been a gift as well.

The real issue is that he can't make a decent living from being World 245 and GB 7 best player.

i can confirm he does have a BMW however im not sure how this is valid? We should not jump to conclusions. For all we know it could have been a present, family passing. Who are we to judge when they do so much travelling in this country why shouldn't he be able to travel comfortably.
