A strong under 12 team, led by Holly Fischer, who did well at the Orange Bowl and Bolton Teen Tennis, has stormed into the finals to be held at Sunderland in 2 weeks time. The team (Holly, Kylie Bilchev and Andrea Pineda) has posted 3-0 wins over the Slovak Republic and Estonia, not conceding a set, and play Ukraine tomorrow for seeding rights.
Ukraine was a tougher proposition, but Kylie squeezed through a 3 setter before Holly comfortably won the top singles, though the pair were beaten in doubles. Hence a 2-1 win sees them top the group. There is a photo of the team at www.tenniseurope.org/photobook.aspx (Holly, Andrea, Kylie from L-R). For anyone interested in seeing Holly in action at least one of her matches at Auray last year is on YouTube ( www.youtube.com/watch )
The under 14s and under 16s play their qualifiers next weekend.
Now, I might have completely the wrong Holly, so don't take this as gospel. Seem to remember a very young girl on the junior scene who looked remarkably similar (definitely same hair!!) about 2-3 years ago. Good for her age but quite small and slight. Didn't think she was a Brit though as I believed Mum was American and Dad was German but remember mum telling me that she trained both with Jo Durie and at the NTC so probably was British. Mum also said facilities and opportunities for tennis were better in the US and they were thinking of transferring themselves over to Florida for that reason. Assume they went as haven't come across them since.
That's interesting. Thanks, The O. Definitely sounds like the same girl. She looks quite tall for her age now, but still very slim, so maybe just had a growth spurt. (I wondered if there was a German father somewhere - not many British 'Fischers' with a 'c').
I found some references to her, several with a Florida connection. So that all ties in. She certainly seems to be making good progress so the move over there may well prove to be inspired.
Mixed fortunes for the under 14s and under 16s in their opening qualifiers. The under 14s are seeded second, but Indianna Spink and Esther Adeshina lost to home opponents (Sweden) with Victoria Allen combining unsuccessfully with Esther. The 3-0 defeat means they are playing for the minor places.
The under 16 team of Georgina Axon, Jodie Anna Burrage and Emily Appleton had a good day, beating Austria 3-0 (Jodie and Georgie winning singles and combining), but need to win tomorrow against top seeds Latvia to progress to the finals
The U14 girls have won their consolation semi. With wins for Victoria Allen and Ester Adeshina. Will play Denmark in the consolation final.
And, in a seemingly excellent result, the U16 girls have won the main draw semi, convincingly, with two easy victories against top seed, Latvia, by Jodie Anna Burrage and Georgina Axon. (Emily A not down to play the doubles again - maybe injured?).
Their main draw opponents for the final are not yet decided.
Emily teamed up with Georgie in the doubles to seal a 3-0 win. Latvia were top seeds on TE rankings, but GBR would have been seeded 1 on ITF ranking. The qualifying final opponents will be either Netherlands or Romania who are tied 1-1
Jodie lost a tight 3 setter in a final set tiebreak against Netherlands before Georgie took over, demolishing Isolde De Jong both in singles and in doubles (aided by Jodie) to ensure Britain topped their qualifying group
The under 14s won their consolation final, thanks to singles victories by Indianna and Esther
The under 12 finals start at 10am tomorrow in Sunderland. Having won their group Holly et al avoid the perennially strong Russians, and are drawn against Hungary in the quarter-finals
There were no close contests in the quarter-finals, with all 4 matches ending 3-0 (6-0 in sets). Holly and Kylie were imperious handing out bakery products throughout, to join Italy, Russia and Ukraine in the semis
U12 QF
GBR 3 Hungary 0
Kylie won 6-1 6-1
Holly won 6-1 6-1
Kylie/Holly won 6-0 6-1
Another singles demolition job by Kylie and Holly to guide the team to the final at the Sunderland Tennis Centre for the first time since the under 12s event started in 2012. It will also be the first time that Russia are not in the final
SF
GBR 2 Italy 1
Kylie won 6-2 6-2
