Who'd have 'thunk' it?

The top two seeds in the Wrexham British Tour event this week are ........... Liam Broady and Luke Bambridge !

Keeping an eye on Wrexham as two of our top players are here.

Youngster Finn Bass seemingly gave a very good account of himself, although Liam came through. A lot easier easier for Bambo.

L16

Liam Broady def. Finn Bass 6-4 6-3
Luke Bambridge def. Euan Wilson-Baig 6-2 6-0

Other winners through to the QF were Marcus Walters, Nicholas Nugent, Mason Recci, Kyle Fellows, Clay Crawford, and Matthew Lee.

Nice to see Nick Nugent's name cropping up again.  He was a very promising youngster (although I feel he had rather an advantage in the younger age groups height-wise) who stopped playing a couple of years ago after needing back surgery.  Not sure how seriously he's playing now but that he's playing at all suggests a good recovery from the surgery.

In the QFs,

Liam def. Nugent,
Mason Recci def. young Marcus Walters,
Clay def. Kyle Fellows, and
Luke B def. Matt Lee

In the semis,

Liam def. Mason 6-4 6-1
Luke def. Clay 6-1 6-2

So it's a Liam/Luke final (as expected)

Bit worrying:

Luke def, Liam 6-7(4) 4-2 retired

Hope you're OK, Liam. And well done, Luke.

Liam, most particularly, but also Luke, in British Tour is not a great sight. And Liam retiring most certainly not.

Do indeed hope he's OK and it's a minor issue.

I don't know what's happened to Liam but if he's injured himself here chasing £750 after the small fortune he won at Wimbledon then he's a fool. He had nothing to gain from playing this event anyway. Hope he's okay.

I very much doubt he was chasing £750 Mark. I suspect he was using the event purely for match practice. Nothing wrong with that.

Shhh, match practice against inferior players is of little or no use in any sport, you might as well just hit with someone at your local club, you only improve by playing better players. If he did want practice he should have at least played where he can pick up points and money. Liam has gained nothing from this exercise other than maybe an injury. The scheduling of some of our players continues to beggar belief.

Mark, I admit it seems an odd choice of tournament. His injury now makes it seem even more ill advised but that is hindsight. I have no idea why he chose to play here but, realise it could be many things.....for example to practice with new rackets or equipment, a different type of serve etc. Maybe just to win one or two matches again??? I just find it hard to imagine that Liam entered chasing the £750. It appears not to have worked out well but I dont think we can judge from a computer screen thats all.

Or the fact that he was expecting to hit with the DC team and never got asked in the end, so had a free week and played for pocket money.

It's possible, too, that he's got some connection to Wrexham, or someone at Wrexham (whatever or whoever that might be).

Or that it was an arrangement with Luke - again for whatever reason, but they're both off to Turkey this week, so they're obviously co-ordinating their schedules.

And, as Shhh says, it makes sense to get match practice with lower ranked players if you want to try out new equipment, new tactics, new point strategies etc. in a matchplay situation. It's not true that you only improve by playing better players. Most coaches will make you play lower tournaments so you can practice crushing opponents (say), being more aggressive, using your top=spin backhand if you normally slice, whatever. All things that you can't so playing better players because you're chasing the ball down the whole time.

Anyway, let's hope he was just ill and not injured. Does anyone actually know that he was injured? I guess we'll see in Turkey.

In Loughborough, honours go to the 'old' man in the field:

Semis:

Adam TB def. George Davies 7-5 7-6(4)

Richard Bloomfield def. Jay Clarke 6-3 6-4

Final:

Bloomers def. Adam TB 6-1 6-2

Well done, Richard.

(For the 'junior watchers', just to note that Jay Clarke def. Marcus Walters in the QF, 6-2 6-2)
