Serene progress today and an amazing road travelled, casting aside doubters left and right over the last six weeks.
Andy is still Andy, that Andy, and we still have much to which we can look forward from him.
Well I am one very happy bunny on Andy's behalf. But not with the (quite expensive) tennistv livestream, which was appalling, fuzzy, and stopping every few seconds. I ended up watching the games then hitting"live" while they sat down, but sometimes it was so far behind that I missed the first couple of points of the next game. Tennistv's live help told me they were aware of the problem and the relevant team was working to correct the problem - well, not by the end of the match they hadn't.
I'm assuming they will be able to produce a seamless stream for the "catchup" so I can actually see what happened!
Dimitrov was very poor, but Andy was very very good, on this form I might have to reevaluate my predictions for 2015.
On the contrary, I thought Dimitrov was playing pretty well first set. I think it was more a case of Andy playing so well Dimitrov looked poor in comparison, than the latter not playing that well. Murray had an answer for everything, it seemed.
This is the one I'd like to see him win but is the motivation there now he's qualified? Federer alluded to the difficulties of playing a continuing schedule across consecutive weeks in his Sky interview yesterday. Tiredness may be creeping in but on the other hand with a win against Djokovic at this point who could then deny that Murray isn't back at the top where he belongs?
I think returning to the top 4 and beating these guys is still motivation enough.
If anything, with the WTF no longer on his mind, he might be more relaxed and just go for it. Equally he might start to feel the fatigue - mentally as much as anything - and might just fall away if Djokovic is looking strong. Given Andy has never beaten Novak after losing the first set, you would imagine that will be key.
I'll be pretty happy with something of a competitive performance from Andy today. I would probably take 4-6 4-6 after several weeks of tennis and both physical and mental effort. Playing the big guns takes a lot and whilst I have no doubt that, come the AO, Andy will have some of that fire, I expect him to fall short today. Not like there is any shame losing to somebody like Djokovic or Federer on the best days.
