Tom broken serving for the match but still up a set and 5-2*.

I haven't checked throroughly but he might be going for his best ranking scalp against a non-Brit here - his best overall, as for quite a few other Brits, is v Josh Goodall when Josh was ranked 266.

FINAL: Tom Farquharson WR 686 v Adrien Bossel (SUI) WR 412 (CH 317 in 2012)

Terrific display from Tom. Apart from a ropey opening game, he was terrific. Broke back in the first set and then fought back from 5-2 down in the tie break. Second set, he ran away with playing some terrific tennis.

I have to say Jules played a decent match, but Tom's backhand was terrific and his backhand slice was almost unplayable(the low bounce helped)

Tom was playing at levels similar to winning Wirral, maybe higher and if he plays like that he will beat Bossel. He mixed his game up superbly. Some serve and volley, some from the backcourt, some lovely drop shots and some fabulous winners. He also got a lot of returns back into play.

When Tom is on form, I firmly believe he has the ability to climb inside the top 150

Bossel in the final - only saw bits of that match, but he is a bit of a talker, has a big lefty serve and a decent lob. Wesley has a monster serve, but his ground game is average.

Just a couple of other things to note - very few spectators, no more than 15-20 all day.

The courts seem to have been relaid since last year, but have lower bounce.

The presentation in the doubles was a bit tinpot. Held in reception, with no-one about, just myself, Nigel Smethurst and the receptionist...

So the usual non effort to sell the game at futures level ( and even challenger level ) to the general public.

Well done, paulisi, for swelling the rather meagre numbers. Hope you cheered loudly. Bit sad that none of the Bolton HPC players/coaches/youngsters were there. Not to mention the locals.

My money would be on Bossel tomorrow but that's purely on experience, not tennis.

Very pleased for Tom.

And maybe some thoughts for Marcus ? His retirement obviously helped Tom's run get going.

The problem with Sportcity is that it is not an old fashioned members club and it's in a non residential area, so I wouldn't expect many to turn up. There maybe a few more tomorrow. I'll be back to advise
Wirral on the other hand, gets the junior members to be ball boys for the final, their family come down and they persuade club members to come down, so there are generally 100-150 watching the final and a proper atmosphere.

But why wouldn't the Bolton lot be there ? Wouldn't that be a good learning experience and part of the programme ? I guess maybe they went earlier in the week (don't see much point for them just going along for one match, unlike more general public members who'll be free tomorrow and, as you say, might turn up for a final - or not.)

There were no Bolton players there. Ash went out in the doubles yesterday and Clay didn't get through the qualifiers. There don't seem to be many senior or top junior players at Bolton at present.
